Removing front crank seal

Question for any of the DIY'ers here:

My '07 3.0si shredded a belt and part of the belt got wrapped around, then took out the front crank seal. Rented the removal/install tool kit from eeuroparts. The removal tool uses 6 sheet metal screws to grab the edge of the seal, and is supposed to pull the seal out. Unfortunately, the screws keep pulling out without the seal.

I have ordered the other style tool that threads into the seal and pulls it out.

Does it make the seal removal easier if the engine is brought up to temperature first; since the aluminum block will expand faster than the steel ring in the seal? I'm not talking about running it for a long time, just 10-15 mins to warm up the block.

Thanks in advance

Engines have been destroyed by pieces of the belt entering the oiling system and clogging passages.

I would not run the motor until I account for all piece of the belt. You think it 'just took out the seal'...could be much more.

Just saying.

i've already run it a couple hundred miles

Its not a DD anymore, if the motor shits itself; i'll part it out

The 2nd link says its for N54/N55 so I was reading the details. I then saw this comment.

This tool works perfectly if you are changing the front seal because it's leaking. If the drive belt failed and got wrapped around the crank and is causing it to leak, then it is highly likely the seal is pushed rearward slightly toward the timing chain. If this happened the screw threads on this tool will not engage the seal tight enough to pull it out, because the bolt head on the crankshaft will contact the inside bottom of the tool before the threads fully engage the seal. The tool should have been 10 mm deeper and it would be perfect. Even with this issue, the tool is still the best one on the market for this job. The quality and material is excellent and the design concept is perfect. The tool designer needs to do the seal removal in the real world and this problem would be solved. I sent my tool to a machine shop and had him bore a clearence hole in the bottom that also removes the threaded nut from the top. It cost me $30. I then welded the original nut that was machined off to a 1/4" thick flat washer and welded that assembly back onto the removal tool. It works great.

I hope that isn't the case with my engine; if so, then I might be doing the same machining as that guy did... That seal definitely needs to be replaced; it is slinging some serious oil around the bottom of the engine compartment.

If I intended to keep the X5 long term; then I would get this part as a precaution after replacing the crank seal. I think I'm going to get this for my 535i tho...

As a recent purchaser of a vehicle with an N52 in it (06 E61 530xi wagon). Thank you for posting this. Wish it was cheaper... but that's a small price to pay compared to what can happen when the belt shreds.
