Oil Service Reset - "OK" ... NOT!

I haven't posted in a long time. I have an E70 X5 with 230k. The last two oil changes I've attempted to reset the oil service milage. I know the reset procedure. But, when I reset, it first says "Reset?", I press and hold and the reset goes away setting the milage to "---". But, when I turn the car on, the milage is what it was before. So I attempt to reset it again and it simply says "OK" in such a condescending tone like " 'Ok'.. you already tried to reset but 'aint gonna happen"... Each time I try after the first attempt it always says "OK" but the reset does not work.

I'm not sure what's going on here. The vehicle runs like a top. No codes or service alerts. But I am simply unable to reset the oil milage.

I've seen people say that the oil level sensor could go bad and cause this, but the oil sensor seems to be working just fine as is senses the oil, and when I add more it will increase the level on the monitor.

Any help trying to figure out this anomaly would be great! This isn't affecting anything other than the annoyance of the milage creeping down to 0. I just want 100% functionality!

Thanks in advance all!

Congrats on the high mileage! My last X5d was at 225k when I sold it and still ran like a champ. I hope to get my 2013 up that high as well.

My Indie Mechanic (who has 2 high mileage E70s) has told me that there is a limit to the number of times the Oil Service Monitor can be reset, and after that number it can not be reset again.
He has this issue with both of his E70s, and has seen it on MANY other BMWs as well.

Sorry for the bad news,
John

It's awesome that you have got 200K+ miles!! Do you put 50k+ miles on your X5? What do you do about trans fluid? Water pump, hpfp?

I id change the water pump and serpentine belt. I may have the serpentine belt changed again soon. I also had the coolant flushed a few times so no clogs in the heater core.

One thing I did miss was the transmission fluid change interval. Foolish mistake but to date I have no issues with it. If I have the fluid changed now it will prob start slipping. I don't beat on the vehicle either so that prolongs it's life.

There's a limit to how many resets? That's craziness. Why would BMW program in something like that? I change my oil every 5k nd reset it each time. Could that be why BMW suggests changing the oil every 16k? So you never see that limit?

I dunno, that doesn't really seem right to me. The programmers would have had to intentionally do that.

Thanks for the tips!

I recall reading something that the system stops at 186k miles or 300k km.

Talk about stupid ....

BMW even published an sib, corrective action is disable the CBS system and change based on miles.

Thanks for the reply...

This is idiotic! I have 230k miles so apparently I can't even deactivate this. It's just creeping down to 0 miles left with no way to reset and no way to deactivate. What a foolish design! I'm mind blown by this.

mejim707 10-17-2019 01:23 PM

Oh nevermind, it says it can be deactivated if over 185k Miles.

I should be able to deactivate it then. I'm going to try but so annoying.
