Alternator failure - e70 3.0si
 

So the e70 3.0si (2007) alternator seems to have gone, at about 100,000kms. We got this e70 used, and my thoughts are that alternator should not fail at such a low mileage. Any experiences? Perhaps previous owner clocked the mileage backwards?

1. They have been know to fail relatively early.


2. Are there other things that make you think someone played games with your Odo? Any weird dots on the mileage display per chance? Interior or other look more like a 300K car?


If you have a BMW computer/code reader, you may be able to look at mileage readings stored in various modules, if you suspect tampering.

OK.. I was under impression they would fail at about 200,000km or more (140,000miles...)

Yes. The door trim handles on all four doors were worn (and rather sticky) on the inside, something I caught after purchase. It was not easy to spot those. Also the Pano roof cloth started sagging inside, so I suspect previous owner just glued it for temporary sale. The AC vent on centre dash also had its little button fall in, a sign of too much use? Oh and the starter motor, both rear airbags and many suspension parts had to be replaced. I suspect this is too much work for a 60,000 mile (100,000km E70). Hence my clocking suspicion.

I got the "Charging Malfunction" message earlier this year. If you don't hear bearing noise coming from the alternator, there is a good chance that it could just be the voltage regulator. Regulators are replaceable, and mounted on the back of the alternator case. They include new brushes, and might fix your problem. They go about $125 online, but there are 2 different alternators in the X5; a 180A, and a 220A. Make sure you get the right one. They are made by different vendors, and are NOT interchangeable (nor returnable).

Yeah looks like.it was the alternator. Yes it was the 220A. Already replaced and running.
