How to remove transfer case motor on E70?

I’m trying to remove the servo motor on the transfer case of my 2007 X5 4.8i E70, so I can replace the faulty gear. I’ve removed the 6 bolts holding the support beam for the transfer case, but there is very little room to move it out of the way, which means I can’t get enough access to the bolts holding the motor to the transfer case.

I’ve found a bunch of videos for doing this on other models, but they are all slightly different than the E70. And I can’t find any videos specific to the E70.

I’ve also removed some of the nuts holding up the edges of the heat shields, but that also doesn’t give me enough room to access the bolts on the motor. From the looks of it, I need to remove just about all of the plastic side panels under the car, and then remove nearly all of the heat shields just to get at the motor.

Am I missing something? Has anyone else done this on an E70?

There is a 7th bolt that goes sideways through the mount into the transfer case. Did you remove that one?

No, from the videos I’ve watched and the threads I’ve read, they all say that that thru-bolt doesn’t need to be removed. But I may try removing it and see what happens. I’m worried though about being able to retread that thru-bolt back in when I’m done. I can’t see or feel the other end of the bolt.

Have you searched through newtis.info?

I finished this job a while back, but thought I’d report on what I did. I ended up removing that long through bolt. That allowed the support frame to swivel down and just enough out of the way that I could get tools and my hand up in to loosen the bolts for the servo motor.

The bottom two bolts were easy, but I had to use a universal joint and get at the top two bolts completely blind. The same was true for getting everything back together.

Thanks for the update. I am about to embark on this journey, and as you say there are no decent tutorials for the E70.

This is actually terrifying, as all the X3 and E53 videos say it is super easy :(

VW what are you experiencing that makes you think the gear is faulty? I notice some shutter in second gear and was wondering if it’s the same gear.

I am getting a progressively worse stutter when I accelerate. What is weird is that it doesn't really happen in Sport mode!

More likely worn out oil in transfer case.
