Sounds like parking brake isn’t actually braking correctly. Usually that triggers a light, but maybe there’s a faulty part that doesn’t. The auto hold uses the hydraulic actuator but the parking brake should hold without rolling after engaged. At least mine does, either by engaging it manually or shutting off with auto hold on. The car doesn’t roll at all.

That is how I would have expected it to work. Which leads me to believe mine is not working at all, and that the car does use the hydraulic brakes as a parking brake when the engine is running, since there is no movement after engaging the parking brake, UNTIL I turn off the engine.. :(

My parking brake module failed a couple years ago and I read and learned a bit on the differences between two systems then. I ended up pulling my parking module and sending it to be rebuilt (with new cables) which solved my problem, but I never actually studied how it brakes the rear wheels. I think(?) broken cables will throw a light/code, if not that may be your issue, but otherwise I’d guess parking shoes

The parking brake behavior is exactly as described above. It's the same way the auto hold works as well, incidentally. If auto hold is on when the ignition is switched off, then the parking brake is engaged. In fact, the only difference in operation between the two is that moving the accelerator pedal will disengage auto hold and when auto hold is holding the vehicle, the brake lights are on.

Hmmm, Let's see how complicated we can make a parking brake :wow:

Yeah I like the feature of one touch stop, hit start button and trans is in park and the brake is on. Conversely I usually disengage the parking brake by activating auto hold.

Sorry, I've edited my original reply to indicate that you can get out of the drivers seat on a slope while Auto Hold keeps the X5 steady. BUT the X5 will still lurch once the engine is turned off :(

Autohold uses the hydraulic brakes (at least as best I understand it), when you switch the car off with AH on it auto engages the parking brake and releases the hydraulic brakes. So still sounds to me like you have a mechanical parking brake problem.

Have the same issue. Reverse into drive on down slope. Put on electronic brake . Move transmission into P on lever. Release footbrake. Car is fine until turn off engine. Jolts forward as if it finds a parking slot on gear and stops. Happens on level ground too but not noticeable enough to worry.

Has anyone tried adjusting the parking brakes as described in this TIS?

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...-brake/GXGyi33

If so, did it “fix the lurch” described in several of the previous posts?
And
Do both adjusters have right handed threads?

FWIW I started to adjust my parking brakes today and took these photos with a WiFi inspection camera.

It looks like my adjusters have never been touched. Although I wonder just how much wear an X5’s parking brakes get. Never the less, I was game to try but couldn’t find my long thin screwdriver. Of course as soon as I had the X5 lowered back down and the tools put away, I remembered where the screwdriver was :(

+1 Thanks for sharing this info here. My car started doing the same thing. I thinks it’s just a matter of putting it on park, releasing through emergency cable in the trunk, then press the brakes really hard. Then start the car, push down the parking brake. It’s back to its position. I haven’t tried, but that’s what is says in the tis. Will try next time and let you all know. Good luck.
