TPMS Failure *tried search*
 

Good morning all,

I recently stepped down from 19" to 18" wheels on my 2013 diesel. It's not a show car and I live on a dirt road in the country, the more sidewall the better. Anyway; I had new tires fitted to the 18's and they didn't come with sensors. I took it to my LTS and asked if new sensor came with the tires, they said yes and fitted them accordingly. I drove around for 1-2 days with no issues until I took it about 45 minutes up the highway then the TPMS light went off saying the module failed. I used my foxwell scanner to check and it states that all 4 wheel sensors are faulty.

My questions are: do I take the car back to the tire shop and ask them to replace the sensors? Is it possible to determine whether its the tire sensors or the module without buying a new module and swapping them out?

I'm leaning toward faulty sensors since this wasn't an issue for the last year of ownership. It seems that specific BMW sensors may be necessary but wouldnt the tire shop know that? It's a national chain so you would think their system would flag them for what kind to use.

Is “my LTS” a local store for this national tire chain?

I am unaware of tires ‘coming with sensors’. Do you mean “when I purchased a tire package from you, should it have also included sensors?”

Finally, what sensors did they install??????

I would recommend that you call LTS (??) immediately or ASAP when they are open and tell them you are having issues.

Since your subject line indicates that the TPM sensors failed...but later in your description, you say that iDrive is saying that the "module" failed. We can only assume that the what really happened is somewhere in between those two components. BUT...if the issue is the new TPM sensors...the seller needs to know ASAP so that they can determine if they need to replace them, or have you bring them back so that they can check if something on their end needs to be done over or rechecked.

You can install aftermarket TPM sensors...but they may require some programming or "awakening" to be able to communicate with your BMWs RDC module. Also, your model year falls in the time frame when BMW was changing the sensors...so maybe that also needs to be rechecked

Good luck...and again, you need to contact LTS as soon as possible to see what they are able to do in regards to diagnostics of the sensors they installed. They should be able to read them to see if they are transmitting the correct signal...if they are...then perhaps your control module has flacked out.

Thank you for that information. I will call them today and get this all figured out. I was hoping to do it over the weekend and just couldn't find the time.

LTS = Local Tire Shop, FYI. I don't like slinging mud at anyone unless it's warranted.

Then better pave that driveway!

I went yesterday and had the sensors scanned. Sure enough, they are all faulty. Kind of surprised I guess that all 4 would fail but whatever. They are replacing them for me today or tomorrow (whenever I can get it in there) so hopefully that takes care of the issue.
