Rear shock part numbers
Hey guys I own a 2008 e70 x5 4.8 without sport package without 3rd row with self leveling suspension I am having a hard time finding KYB part replacement compatible with my model I already contacted KYB headquarters in Illinois and they claim they don’t make any for self leveling suspension but as far as I am aware they all came with rear cylinder airbags!!
I called a local autoparts supplier and they claim they have KYB compatible with my basic x5 KYB 341728 KYB 341727 I do not want something better I just want to know if these are compatible .. :( Not even rockauto helps the local Beverly Hills bmw dealer looked up my car by last 7 of VIN and gave me these part numbers 33526781923 33526781924 |

What do you mean by this???? Only cars with self leveling came with airbags. Every car w/ 3rd row has this. Very (very very) rarely a car without 3rd row might have been ordered w self leveling. Based on the descriptions you posted, those KYB numbers will *not* fit your car. ie "Except self leveling". |

Because the market is comprised of lazy morons, they have equated "self leveling" with "3rd row". Now, we all know these are semi-independent options...but they are equating them
What is odd, is that you cannot seem to grasp this. Or that you are hoping and wishing this 'glitch' in how the resale market handles this option oddity can somehow me exploited to give you what you want. The "I have self leveling and no 3rd row...so they say it works for 'no third row'"...as if this technicality will result in a fitment success. The sachs '315 crosses to a BMW '921... you need a '923. Sucks, I know. How many miles on the shocks, that they are now bad? |

They aren’t bad I’m just trying to refresh suspension parts 106k on dash Having a hard time understanding your 921 to 923 |
Bump

The bMW part numbers...instead of typing xx-xx-x-xxx-921 I just used the '921
IMO, the rubber bits in a BMW..isolation bushes- will need replacing before shocks. There are tons. The E70s really havent gotten there yet, where you see DIYs for massive restorations of all possible wear items.... |
As far as I can tell, vehicles either have two types of rear upper shock mounts: short or tall. The air suspension and 3rd row seats vehicles seem to use the short mounts; others tall. The tall mounts accommodate longer shocks, the short, shorter shocks. Disclaimer: I have not bought shocks, yet, so you need to confirm- just trying to give you some background. I would just buy both sets and return the excess to be sure.

Opposite
So I have air suspension and I checked the other day and I have the short upper shock mount. I believe the air suspension uses the short shock bodies.

I forgot if you have 3rd row seating and I’m mobile right now. It’s hard to say- If you have 3rd row seating go to your car and raise the rear interior hatch, then pop off those reusable plastic rivets that hold the carpet to the side. Take clear pictures of the upper shock mount and post here. Without more info I have a hard time even guessing! The people who wrote the shock figment blurbs should be shot!

Bummer, that would have given us a little more clarity.
Ok, here is what I do, but don't shoot the messenger! If you look at the Rockauto pictures of the KYB shocks.. one pair says with 3rd row, the other pair says without. The "with 3rd row" shocks look shorter than the "without 3rd row" shocks in the Rockauto pictures. To my understanding there are only tall and short upper shock mounts. If you have air suspension and no 3rd row seat, and you assume my vehicle came built like yours (I have short upper shock mounts, are suspension, no 3rd row), and the Rockauto pictures are accurate, then you would have the short upper shock mounts and need the shorter shocks. In this case, I would go for the KYB's on closeout, which are the "with 3rd row seating" KYB option. I would probably buy the with 3rd row and without 3rd row shocks are return what you don't use. Rockauto might have restrictions on returning closeouts, but it's only a $60 buck loss if the short shocks don't work out. Let us know what happens if you move forward! |

Excellent
I bought the B12 kit and top hats last week. Thanks for the confirmation. I was still a little unsure. Also, I bought all the foam parts, except the foam bump stops. Do the B8 shocks come with the bump stops? I have conflicting information, especially for the front B8’s.
In the process, I also ordered the power flex poly bushings for the front suspension. The B12 kit is on backorder until March. Unhappy face. |
