E70 3.0si loud whine from engine bay, increases with speed
Our 2007 X5 3.0si has a whine from engine area that increases with speed, it's almost unbearable above 90km/h. Where could this be from? At low speeds it's not much.
An alternator was serviced sometime back, could this be the cause? Or is this water pump? Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk |
Try replacing the belt tensioner.

The whining increases with engine speeds. The more the speed the louder the whine. Can't stand it beyond 70mph. Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk |
It could be the pulley/bearing on an accessory... but the most likely culprits are the tensioner pulley and idler pulley. It's good preventative maintenance to replace them every ~100-120k miles anyway and they aren't too costly. At least here in the States they aren't.

Mine does this intermittently but it's not unbearable. The strange thing is if I stop and restart the noise is gone until the next cold start. I've replaced belts and tensioners at 85K which has reduced the frequency but hasn't completely eliminated.
