Help with accessory belt install?
 

I’m trying to install a new A/C accessory belt on an E70 N62tu. The tensioner is this model with a slotted bolt and a second fixed bolt.

I can reach the slotted bolt to loosen or remove it, but I can figure out how to reach the fixed bolt, which I’m guessing needs to be removed so the tensioner can slide down and allow the belt to be positioned.

The fixed bolt is facing straight down. There is so much other stuff in the way though, so I can’t reach it even with a very long extension and a universal joint. Even if I could, I’d never be able to get my hand in there to get the bolt back in place when I was done.

Is there some other way to get the belt on without removing or shifting the tensioner? Or am I missing some way to get access to the second bolt?

I think you are posting on another forum as well. Use a Dremel and cut a slit in the upside down bolt. That way you can use a flathead to turn its. With the fan out you have room just take it slow when cutting.

Oh, do you mean cut a slit in the end of the bolt (the opposite end from the end where the Torx head is), so that a flathead screwdriver can be used on in from above? If so, very interesting. Sounds like taking the fan out may be needed to have enough room for a Dremel to get in there.

Yes. That’s what I’m talking about. It’s a popular alteration to that bolt. Just be sure not to cut anything else around it. With the fan removed there should be enough room for you. I believe those two bolts also tighten to 22nm when you reinstall the belt.

Cutting a slot in the top of the bolt worked like a charm! It took a bit of acrobatics to get a Dremel down there and hold it in the right position, but I eventually got it. Thanks for the help!
