N62 engine bad valve cover
 

08 e70 n62 had a bad oil leak I keep getting worse so I had a mechanic replace the valve cover gaskets this weekend but the passenger side is still leaking mechanics thanks the valve cover is Warped, can a valve cover get warped or go bad

Absolutely. They're made of plastic. How many miles are on your X5?

To be fair, the N63's covers sell nowhere near as fast as the others but they still do sell.


You said the mechanic "thinks" its warped. Ask him to make sure its that before taking the plunge I guess.

After you got everything back together he called me to come pick it up when I got there he was still working on it it was smoking, then he noticed that it was still leaking that's when he came to the conclusion that the valve cover was warped ,he did a good job the engine bay was super clean pressure washed it I ran my finger under the valve cover I can feel it a thin layer of oil just coming out

Ive heard that it is somewhat easy for the gasket to get unseated when maneuvering it into place. As I recall.

The n62 valve cover is a bit more robust than some other models. Warping is not as common. I have heard many times of the n62 valve covers having to be redone because of it not seating right, the gasket being rolled, or not using RTV on the half moons in the back. I redid mine and I think it seeps a little because of an improper torquing sequence. If you haven’t done the valve stem seals yet you might want to wait until you can do those at the same time.

Maneuvering the valve cover into place is very tricky, and it is easy to displace or roll the gasket in the process. I had to use RTV to stick the gasket in place, as regular gasket adhesives weren't strong enough. Also, it's important to use a bit of RTV at the half moons at the rear and at the junctions of the head and timing case cover at the front. One last thing - there are little clips on the inside of the valve cover from the factory at the long edges. Remove them and throw them away - they will only get in the way of getting a proper seal. Torque it properly from the middle outwards with the new bolts and grommets from the gasket kit, and you should be good.

So, what does the OP do? How do you manage your Indy in this case?

If you assume he is accurate, you pay $$$ for a new cover, mechanic re-does it, and you will never know. Or will mechanic call up and say “yeah, turns out I messed up- so you can return the new valve cover and this job is on me”?!?!?!

Do you say ‘take the cover off, give it to me- I’ll have it inspected”?

Any ideas?

Well I'm usually my own Indy, so I'd smack myself fight club style and take it apart again. But that's probably not what you asked :D

Well, it's got to be redone, and unless you're capable of assessing the valve cover yourself you may need to trust the indy and eat the cost. Definitely get the old part. Or maybe take it to another Indy if you have concerns about the first one. I don't know how often these valve covers fail; in my case they seemed pretty sturdy for a plastic part. Unfortunately replacing the valve cover on these engines is not a simple task. I don't know what the book time is for this job, but it would take me about 3 hours per side now that I've done it once.
