AWD and DST Malfunction
 

We bought my son a 2008 X5 3.0si E70. We replaced the belts (serpentine and AC) and while doing so he sat in it and left something on and ran the battery dead. So we replaced the battery. Now we are getting an AWD AND DST malfunction warning. Could this be because these were replaced?

yes. When the voltage gets critically low,the modules are starved and can start up in odd states.


Does it start, run- just a wrning? Does it clear?



Is this a dashboard warning? or actual codes. A code reader to read and then reset is a very good idea.....

We ran it for codes but it doesn’t come up. It does start and run but we haven’t driven it yet. The warning come up on the NAV, etc screen. The battery has not been registered yet either. We have an appointment to do that on Monday morning along with an oil change at the BMW dealership. We are totally new to BMWs. We bought him and paid cash for this after we bought and paid cash for a 2008 Mercedes and he was T-Boned 2 days later by a distracted driver. We hope the BMW is safer...although the Mercedes took a pretty good smack and held up.

Turn the steering wheel lock to lock while the engine is running and the transmission is in Park.

You are going to get MASSIVELY screwed....

Do what josiahg52 recommends. This resets the steering angle sensor.


Please change your own oil...if you can do the belt you can do the oil.


I know it seems like taking to the 'mothership' will be comforting- let them give it a once over, let you know whats up. But it is nothing more than an opportunity for them to size you up, flip you over and empty your wallet. If you want an expert, find a great indy- not a dealer.



The $$ you spend paying the dealer to register the battery once will pay for a reader you have forever....

+ 1 on turning the steering wheel lock to lock. If that does not work, the AWD module on your 2008 is just to the left of the battery. It will say ATC700 on it. Double-check that the wiring, including the ground behind the battery, is not disturbed.

Very common errors with low battery voltage. Drive it and I bet it goes away.

Any time the battery is disconnected - and I suppose if battery voltage gets really low while still connected - the steering angle sensor position has to be relearnt. The easiest and quickest way to do this is turning the steering wheel lock to lock after starting the engine. Driving it for a few hundred feet assuming the steering wheel will be manipulated during the drive will complete the relearn.

So again, if you've disconnected the battery, the relearn must complete sucessfully or the DSC/AWD Malfunction warning message will be displayed on the iDrive monitor.
