I finally have an update to this. We picked up a "new" engine which is also from a 2009 X5 and had the X5 towed to my place. So far all indications point to a bottom end failure. It looks like rod #6 decided it no longer wanted to be quarantined and made an abrupt exit. There's a large hole through the oil pan right next to the front driveshaft giubo, another pinhole on the passenger side, and lots of parts inside the pan. I already fished part of the connecting rod out and the bottom portion is too large to be removed; there is heat bluing around the rod bearing area so I suspect it lost oil pressure or the bearing was defective.
