2012 X5 35D E70 Knocking/Ticking noise

Hello,

My 35d has developed a ticking or knock that almost sound like lifter or valve lash between 2500rpm-3500rpm. It's louder under no load while coasting to a stop.

It does not sound rod or piston related at all. I have some maintenance parts coming for it already, but does any body have any experience with something like this. I Can't hear it in the car with the windows rolled up at all.

I will be replacing the belts, idler pulley(mine is cracked and wobbly), belt tensioner, oil change, going to a clutched Alternator pulley and switching to an FAI harmonic balancer as I do see some cracking in my existing balancer. I also have a Valve cover Gasket coming as I am starting to get some oil drips in weird places.

Anyone have any ideas? Has anyone gone through this and fixed it. I've heard the noises in American gas powered vehicles but never a diesel at all.

There is no performance loss at all with this. Just noisy, and I am afraid to keep driving.

Is everyone stumped by this problem?

I think I have the same sound, but not really paying attention to it...yet. Your description sounds like mine except ive only noticed it WITH load. And not at all times.

Everything you want to replace, I already have done including the clutched pulley.

This is my first diesel and over the last 21k miles I've gotten used to the various sounds it produces haha

I’ve had countless diesels... this sound is not normal.

It sounds absolutely nothing like that. Yours sounds like parts are touching that shouldn't, like valves and pistons, or worse... I'll see if I can get a video of mine.
