Solved: Dynamic Stability Control malfunction
For the last 8 months I have been getting intermittent Dynamic Stability Control malfunctions. A common factor was driving for over 30min on the highway.this fault never occurred in non-highway driving.
Each time I noticed shutting the vehicle off and then starting it immediately cleared the fault (until I drove another 30-40min). This suggested it wasn't the ABS sensors or steering angle sensor. During this time I noticed my steering wheel was biased to the right by about 3 degrees. Not much but I thought it might cause the vehicle to find fault because the motion of the wheels wound not agree with the steering wheel angle. Yes I did reset the steering angle sensing several times, without benefit. So, I had a good shop check the algnme t and meticulously center the steering wheel relative to the front alignment. Since that time I’ve had no more “Dynamic Stability” faults. I drove 3 hours today thru sometimes heavy rain towing a big trailer, and car ran flawlessly. The Alignment only cost $120. |
Interesting.... wonder if the car was ‘crabbing’ a bit, causing the yaw sensors to slowly build up a very small error that eventually tripped a fault. Around town, you would constantly be moving the steerIn back and forth and not ‘collecting’ this incremental error.
???? just 3 beers at the pool thinking... |
Alignment shop said the only thing out was a bit of excess camber at the right rear and the swheel angle. So the car wasn’t crabbing. But yes the disagreement between swheel angle and wheel speeds seems to have been my root cause. This happened when I replaced control arms and a couple tie rods. At that time, I used a different alignment shop and they didn’t center the s-wheel. I thought nothing of it at the time because the error was fairly subtle.
I’ll bet the dealer should have said, let replace the steering angle sensor... Nice to have a cheap fix now and ten. |
