How did it know I had a towbar (after 300 miles)?
Fitted a 3rd party harness for the towbar which includes the CAN module. All the trailer lights worked on completion, out the box, and I was very chuffed...
But when I hooked up the trailer and reversed, the rear parking sensors were on constantly. I thought ok fair enough, I didn't get the BMW unit, saved some money and would have to put up with it... but after about 300 miles of constant towing, I had to make a U-turn and as I finished the turn I heard a beep from the screen and it showed the diagram of the car with a towbar symbol at the rear. Now, whenever I go into Reverse with the trailer, it knows and I have the towbar symbol displayed with the Front sensors active. Great, but how did it work it out after 300 miles....?? |
Did the wife code it when you weren't looking?

Sorry, not helping. But, what harness/module did you buy?
|
It’s possible, but mostly theory... but between the addition of the harness and the change in load across the light circuit in conjunction with the perpetual alerting from the backup pdc sensors.. that the car kind of “sorted” things out.
I will add to that, that when I bought mine one push of the sunroof button rolled the sunroof screen back half way, another press rolled it back all the way and so on and so on - but, and here’s why I theorize, as I drove the car more and used the sunroof more my one press started to open the cover all the way followed by one press to open the sunroof all the way - call me crazy, but the car “learned” that when I used it, I always did “that” and just started doing it for me.. Crazy... yea, I thought so too. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

Open the pod bay doors, Hal.
My brother's name. :) But seriously OP, any chance it had already been enabled by another owner, and it when you added the module it just took a few cycles to recognize the AHM3 and properly respond? |
The harness kit was from ECS Electronics.
Maybe there's a bit of algorithm in E70 that says if moving forward and if steering turned above a threshold, and if rear parking sensors activated, it can only mean that it is caused by a trailer. |
