Malone Tune 2009 E70 First post

I just purchased a 2009 X5 E70 with 84k.

I also have a 2009 Jetta TDI w/6speed manual trans. I did the full Malone 2.0 tuning and complete Rawtek exhaust turbo back and full delete myself. Completely transformed my car and I hit 53.2 mpg (my record) I average 48.6 at 75 mph when I drive steady without a heavy foot.

I would like to do this to my 2009 X5 35d. I have access to a full shop and auto lift. Wrenching does not scare me. I have also built three dodge cummins projects, never touched a BMW (except my 1957 BMW Isetta 300). I am contemplating a Malone stage 2 and full exhaust replacement with complete delete package.
I have a few questions for those who have gone before me...
Do I need a trans tune? Has anyone had issues from the full delete and tuning? I am getting turbo under boost code when I really get on the throttle. When I stop and turn it off and back on it goes away and it runs fine. it comes back if I really romp on it. I recently took the X5 on a 4 hour 80 mph drive @ 25.4 mpg tank to tank with no issues. The DPF light does not come on when I get the under boost code. Its a generic P0299 code

This is my first post so please be patient lol I tried searching for threads on this topic and there is a lot of threads and opinions! lol

Before doing any modding, sort your low boost pressure code. Also, get a BMW specific code reader. You could have other codes in addition to that one, plus other stored codes that might direct you to the culprit. Chasing P-codes from regular OBD2 scanners on a BMW is like trying to catch a greased pig.

No experience with the deletes or tunes, but others will chime in for that.

Do you have a recommendation for a BMW tuner? I will go purchase one for sure. Thank you!

Foxwell NT520 Pro is a good one. ~$130 and will do 95% of what you could want or need to do. More than a code reader, will reset batteries, modules, show live data, etc.

This is SOOOO true. Any car, any marque.

Sometimes people think "im taking out that stuff so who cares?"

The real issue is that the universe of knowledge and troubleshooting is in cars that DO NOT have a Malone tune. Plus, figuring what was due to a mod versus what was do to an underlying problem.....It just gets much much harder.

agree on the foxwell, they have a few- as long as it has the BMW SW, should be good

I ordered the Foxwell 530. I'm sure i'll be back with questions once I scan the car with a proper scanner/reader. Thanks you guys so far!

Found these 2 codes with my new Foxwell 530. 429A DDE: Boost-Pressure control, low-pressure stage, control deviation.

4D03 DDE: Exhaust backpressure sensor.

Does this mean my sensor is bad? Has anyone dealt with this before?

Congrats on the new chariot. Yours is the same age as mine though you're at half the mileage. The exhaust back pressure code comes up a lot in conjunction with other problems. I would try replacing the sensor but you might find that is merely a symptom, not a cause. Check the vacuum lines that are on top of the turbo in the heat shield that is clipped over them with two push buttons. My vac lines were very bad in that section. A smoke test might be in order as well.

Good luck with the trouble shooting!

Will do! Thank you!

Sensor tube to banjo bolt is probably clogged

Waykooljr 08-30-2020 02:14 PM

Thank you TriX5 and Sunny J.
Sunny, since I am new to the X5 could you please direct me to the banjo bolt and related sensor tubing you mentioned? By the way I would also appreciate any advice on converting my car to Android 8.1 as you have done. I just got this car a week ago and really am liking it so far. My other ride is a full tune/delete everything Jetta TDI with Rawtek turbo back exhaust and Malone 2.0 tune. I did everything myself, but the BMW is new territory for me. A full delete and tune is in the future for the X5 but for now I'm combing through the car and upgrading, and replacing worn components and such.
TriX5, i am ordering new silicone temp rated tubing when i can find it. Do you have a suggested merchant I could go to?
Thanks again to all who commented so far. I really appreciate it!

Hi Waykooljr,

The banjo bolt is on the passenger side of the engine and connects to the sensor with a rubber hose. The sensor is on the bracket behind the turbos and pretty much the only thing easily visible once the engine cover is off. It is the area in the engine bay where a whole gaggle of vac lines converge.

I used the cloth covered vacuum line from AARodriguez on TuneMy Euro.com. [His videos are very useful as are those of project 5seven.] The exception was the line under the turbo going to the waste gate which I bought from GetBMWparts.com, supposedly this one is a different material from the others. You may have a BMW dealer selling online closer than Silver Spring, MD, which is close to my house.

To diagnose your M57 engine you probably should also look in to getting INPA or ISTA software. I feel that without these software packages the maintenance on the E70 is near impossible.

My 4D03 actually turned out to be a faulty sensor

Blue_dragon I've replaced 4 clogged tubes on 4 different x5d in the past year. Sensor was good on every vehicle. It's easy enough to test. Remove the tube from the sensor and blow through it. If no air comes out you know you have a bad tube

Thanks Blue dragon! I am currently reading your thread on that topic. Sunny J I will check out your write up on the Android conversion.
