"Scanner" says you need a cat??!?!?!??
You wanna piss away $$$ based on an OBD code, have fun. Personally Id want a bit more of a diagnosis done. If you agree, post up miles, codes, symptoms, maintenance history...what engine...stuff like that |
It was my friends $18K Snap on Scanner, truck has 128K mileage. I believe it said it catalytic not operating with full capacity, its not plugged, just a small leak, so it wont pass emissions.

I forgot to mention I am in NY and most of them are illegal here.

Yeah, the more money the equipment costs ....the smarter the operator is?.....
FWIW- if a car has been running rich, the cat can become loaded with HCs. not 'clogged', more like fouled. Fixing the AFR issues can restore function. But im sure that $18k scanner would know all this. and should know that magnaflow makes NYS legal replacements for many BMWs, they are just thinner and have a shorter service life. Especially if the underlying issue isnt fixed. Id buy a used one from a friend on the down low. They should last 200-300k if the car is running right. And 900 for a magnaflow vs 1100 for BMW, its a no brainer- BMW GL. |
I'd want to see all of the codes plus fuel trims before I even considered replacing a cat.
