Service Due on Check Control

My 2012 e70 xdrive 35i has about 85K on it. I've had it about a year and half.

The Service Due light has come on. I gather that this is some type of inspection check.

Can any one shed some light on this? I'd like to make sure I keep things up to date. The oil has plenty of life left. I just changed the cabin air filters and the engine air filter. Tires are good, no other warnings - except low windshield fluid.

When did you service the ATF?

I haven't serviced the ATF. I thought from reading it was lifetime, but most changed it around 100K miles.

I thought this light was one of those - 'bring it to the dealer cause we need your $800' lights.

Is there a good source for a maintenance schedule?

Scroll thru the i-drive and it will tell you what service is required.

ATF and other gearbox fluids are due now. Transfer and diff.

Mike Miller did a famous white paper years ago with 'recommend maintenance' google it.

Try not to ever use a dealer.

Is this the white paper you speak of? Thanks for the information.

Yes, although I havent tracked revisions so not sure if there are any later ones.

Importantly, if you read ANY of them you will (hopefully) understand the principles at play, and better assess your own car/needs.

Check your owners manual and also do a google/internet search for BMW CBS (condition based service) so that you can familiarize yourself with what your vehicle is trying to tell you when you see warning lights etc.
