Reset Check Engine light w/o Scan Tool?

Hi guys and gals, I recently did a few maintenance items on my 2011 X5 w/ 3.0 gasoline engine. I did the following work:

flushed and replaced power steering fluid
replaced the charge pipe seal at the throttle body
replaced the oil filter housing gaskets (3 gaskets at oil cooler and 6 intake manifold gaskets)

as you know most of this work is pretty straight forward except the oil cooler work which requires removal or at least loosening of the intake manifold to get at 1 bolt under the manifold on the oil cooler housing. This job is pretty messy too.

Anyway, when I stared the car up after the service it was not happy. Chugging and choking. Obviously I did not install or reconnect everything correctly. So I shut her off and retraced my steps. The only thing that I did different was to snug up the intake manifold. I also made sure any electrical connection I messed with was secure and seated. I still don't know what was the culprit.

Now the car starts and runs fine but I have a check engine light because of the initial startup.

Is it possible to reset this light without a scan tool?

I tried disconnecting the battery and jumping the battery terminals to drain stored energy in the system but without success. I did get a new dash error about the stability system. I cleared that by simply turning the steering wheel full right to full left. Apparently there is some sensor that needs to get recalibrated after the system looses power.

Sorry for the long post, but thought you may need the background.

Thanks for any help you can offer. If I do need to purchase a scan tool I am open to recommendations.

Thanks,

Bob-

Some codes need a few drive cycles to self clear - I’d personally get it checked cos it’d annoy me not knowing what was causing the issue :)

Ok. I purchased a scan tool and cleared the CEL faults.

All good now.

Thanks for the help.

Best,

Bob-
