2011 X5 50i Oil change disaster

Morning guys,

So, before I even start my story... I have been the owner of this vehicle for 8 years and did pretty much every oil change myself with no fcukups. Not sure what happened but being human is my only excuse.

Finished the oil change, double checked that the filter is back on but I guess I didn't. Started engine, oil filter and housing shot out and 9 QTS of oil on my garage floor. I guess the housing went in sideways somehow and it did tighten down but the pressure was too much to handle. In any event, cleanup done(2 hours)... new trip to Autozone, $60 bucks later I was ready to start the vehicle up again. I used the usual 8.5 Qts however as I recalled in the past that brought the green marker to Max. So, I added more oil to see if the green marker would reach it's normal location which it didn't even after I took it around the hood.

So, what do I do? Let some of the oil out? Maybe the above described incident emptied extra oil out of the engine and that's why 10 Qts did not fill the marker to max?

Appreciate your attention accorded to this question,

Lev

PS. Pic below is from a youtube video showing how my car's oil level usually is. Not now, below the max unlike the photo after 10.5 Qts

Do not understand this sentence....

You can usually run a piece of drip irrigation tubing into somewhere to suck out oil. BE CAREFUL, no forcing ANYTHING.

But I cant tell you if you need to...cant tell if you are overfilled...based on the post

hey Ard,

That pic was from a youtube video, showing what my car's display is when full. In any event, the X5 was drained(11 Qts) and refilled with 8.5 qts. Oil display shows a notch under max but at least I know it's got the required amount.

I also have the 50i so maybe i can help.
So you put in 10 quarts and oil level still wasn't at full mark ? that's weird. I allways put in 8.5 liters of oil (9 quarts ??) and oil level is at full mark.
However, i believe you can slightly overfill (lets say you put 9.5 quarts at oil change) and it will still show oil level at max. If you overfill too much you should get message that oil level is above max.
Anyway, I would do some trip (lets say 20 miles atleast) just to get oil really hot and then check oil level and if shown full then wouldn't worry much about it.

Thanks for the input Szlovák :)

I took out the X5 today for a 20 mile run after I refilled the car with the required 9 QTS of oil last night. When I took off the oil level was under max, when I came back the oil level reached the Max as it should. Thanks all for the useful replies!!!!
