A bit overwhelmed, advice appreciated: E70 35d

Hey all, recently purchased a 2011 E70/X5 35d as a repair project because I've wanted one for years and hope you can clarify/expand on a few things that are confusing after a lot of research. I'm coming from a VW TDI so I'm familiar with modifying via VCDS lite.

1. If I'm looking to code/program/reset codes, do I need more that one product (e.g. DCAN cable w/ INPA)?

I'm not looking to to tune, I just want to fix what's broken or deactivate items that are no longer there (i.e. if components are deleted--EGR, etc) at home.

2. I plan on doing the following for initial maintenance and for longevity but what am I missing?
  • Trans fluid/filter and seals
  • Oil change
  • Thermostat
  • Rain tray check/replacement
  • Intake carbon cleaning
  • DPF flush and forced regen

Thanks everyone!

Thanks everyone!

A DCAN cable and INPA will do allow you to do most anything maintenance oriented. You can also download ISTA P if you want to code some items. If you want to dive even deeper and start tinkering with individual modules (like the CAS), you will need separate tools depending on what you're looking to do.

Or you could go with a program like bimmercode or bimmergeeks pro tool.

2nd the vote for ProTool as well as the Bimmergeeks cable - Coding is easy as can be and diagnostics as well - and a plus is you can use the flashing cable with your tablet and XHP Flash tool

(Highly recommend Sutphin Tuning's 6HP trans tune)

Also push for ProTools. Their customer service has been above expectations with every interaction. Very active members on their Facebook page ans the North American BMW Owners Group.

Wanted to add, tunemyeuro.com and FCPEURO.COM have maintenance kits. Really simplifies the items you should replace. I'd write them and ask. For certian a 100,xxx mile service kit. Would look at a transmission service kit.

Im a personal fan of FCP. They have a 100% life time warranty on anything you buy from them. Oil, filters, brakes, engine parts. All of it. I get oil change kits from them and get refunds when I send my used oil and filter.

I second FCP -

Although I don't buy the 'kits' I tend to buy the parts individually - for example they have a Glow plug service kit, comes with all intake manifold gaskets, 6 glow plugs, and module - 1 part fails you don't get a warranty replacement unless you send back the whole 'kit'

It works great for filters, wipers, cabin filters etc the consumable items -

^ What he said. I also avoid the kits as there isn't a big savings on them (sometimes $0) and you lose individual returns.

I've bought kits from FCP. When I need a single part, they told me to buy a new kit, take what I need out, and return the rest with the old parts.

I ended up just changing everything out and returning the old. They refunded without issue...
