Serpentine Belt Replaced - Help Needed
Hi All,
Last weekend I replaced the Serpentine Belt after the Deflector Pulley seized and screwed up the belt (I also replaced the Deflector Pulley). I also replaced the faulty clock spring. After doing this, I test-drove the car ont he freeway for about 40 KMS, and all was well. But now the DCS system has an intermittent fault, and the car looses power while driving. Are the two related? Or is this a new problem? The car is a X5 E70 35d - 2008 model with 215,000 kms on the clock. Any suggestions on what to check would help. |
DsC won't cause limp mode unless the TC is in bad shape. More likely having a power problem. Alternator. What's the voltage while running? (Learn and use the hidden menu)

How do I get into the hidden menu?
I found how to do it on the E53, but can't find how to do it on the E70. |
It's similar just search YouTube. You will most likely need to know the sum of the last 5 digits of your VIN

Found it, and checked voltage.
Voltage is 14.1 to 14.3 while stationary as well as driving, stays at 14.3 when DSC warning comes on. Car also slows down as though the hand brake is suddenly applied - revs (at 40 km/H) are around 2000, but car suddenly slows - revs remain the same! Update: Took the car for a longer drive - 5 Kms - to shops and back. When the car slows down, the speedometer and Tacho do not change - they seem stuck on whatever valued they were at when the event occurred. The slow-down stops occurring when the car has been running for a while - warmed up? I let the car warm up for about 2 minutes, then started driving. Slow-down happened again within 500 meters, but after I stopped to turn on my phone speed app and drove off again, it did not happen again. The 4X4 error light remained on. After my shopping, the slow-down did not re-occur on the way back. When I start the car, the 4X4 error light is off, but comes on again within 100 meters, blinking at first, then steady after about another 100 meters or so. Also, the right turn blinker does not self-cancel, even after a tight turn. However the left blinker is cancelled after a wide left turn - probably the fitting of the clock-spring? Could all of these symptoms be related to the clock spring? Only started after I changed it. |
Codes?

DSC needs the steering angle sensor. I've never seen it affect limp mode though.

The Limp Mode is only momentary - almost like the car is driving through sand - suddenly slows down for a second, then recovers.
Feels like maybe the hand brake is activated then released. Don't know if it has any bearing on this issue but, the car sat idle for 3 weeks while waiting for parts. Early on the battery went completely flat - I couldn't even use the remote to open the doors. I put a battery charger on the terminals in the engine bay for two days, but the battery did not charge at all. So I put the charger on the battery itself in the trunk, but that too did not charge the battery at all. Finally when I got the parts fitted, I jump-started the car and then drove it for 36 kms to charge the battery. It is now showing fully charged. On Monday I will get the battery checked. |
You need some codes. Do you have a BMW level scanner ?

To me it sounds like changing the clock spring has made your car think the steering wheel is turned at an extreme angle, the “power loss” you feel is the stability control cutting engine power and applying the brakes because it thinks the car is in a dangerous maneuver that may cause a rollover or loss of control. Do you have a scan tool that shows current steering angle? If it’s not at 0 or close to it when the wheel is straight that could be causing your problem. Did you relearn the steering angle sensor after replacing the clock spring?
To get it to a shop try deactivating DSC at startup before putting the car in drive. That might help to get it someplace for recalibration. |
