Power steering filters
Now then. Had pressure in my PS reservoir, fluid pissing out instantly the car is started. Had my rack rebuilt and new steering pump fitted (adaptive drive bollox) and it's a lot better, but still bubbling and spewing a little bit out.
I should add it's a 2008 3.0sd It's in with a specialist at the moment and he says it's the reconned pump. Whilst I'm saying he is wrong, I so find it a bit hard to believe. Only other things to change now are all the lines and the roll bars. Jesus this could get expensive. I've a feeling it's possibly a blocked filter, as I've also replaced valve block too. Does anybody know where the filters are located please? |
The reservoir?

Honestly, my mind works quicker than my fingers .
Yeah, I had power steering fluid shooting out of my reservoir. Pump was changed, so was valve block, and rack was reconditioned too. Still happening but nowhere near as bad. I've read about filters in the lines or something, just can't see them on real OEM. Would like to check, or at least clean them as it will do no harm and it's free!! |
I know of no BMW with inline filters. Modern BMWs anyway. The filter is non-replaceable and built-in to the reservoir. You replace the reservoir to replace the filter.

Is it common for the reservoir caps to fail on these? I've read that it can happen, and leak fluid. If it is relatively common, that could be my issue.

I don't know about failing but I guess the o-ring could go bad. I'm much more familiar with the reservoir and system in my 2001 M5. The cap on that reservoir has a vent hole. During the hot summer months and definitely during any type of spirited driving, it would spew fluid all over. First, I made a catch can but finally flushed the system with new synthetic ATF and replaced the reservoir/filter. Used the same cap. No problems for ten years and a lot of miles.

I don't think my cap has a vent hole. I might put one on anyway. Will have a new filter that way too. Can only help. |
