Looking for a 2013 E70 --> Hot Vee, V8 Turbo engine, bad idea?
 

I need to start searching for a replacement for the E53 4.4i, still running great but the kids are spooling on the mileage. A 2013 35d would be my preference but my wife is unlikely to tolerate another 35d because the price of diesel fuel is rather elevated at this point. There is a 2013 V8 E70 for sale near me at a bearable price but I know there were some really bad problems when BMW started with the hot Vee engines. Anyone know if and when that was remedied? Or is it more a matter of getting one with perfect oil changes?

It isnt price per gallon you should look at, but rather cost per mile.... Ima gonna guess the gasser will be more than the diesel- even when diesel is 10-20% more per gallon.


BMW never fixed it. Its not an oil change thing either. IMO

Thanks ARD. I'll need to do some reading and thinking about the direction to go with this. I love the E70 platform and the diesel 35d is great but for some reason 2013 35d are still pricey around here.

Diesel is around 40-45% more than regular at this point in our area, so a diesel would have to be seriously better mileage.

We sold our 2005 3.0i X5 last year and I am so glad we did. I too carefully considered what E70 variant to replace the E53 with. We drove a 2011 50i but it had some long island rust and I was afraid of the maintenance requirements.

The diesel seemed attractive and I was very tempted to buy a board member's here... but again the very complex and expensive emissions parts scared me away. Diesel is currently over $7 in my area vs. $3.50 (with stop and shop discount!) for 93 gasoline.

Ultimately we bought a 2010 30i m-sport from California (totally rust free) and paid to ship it here to Connecticut. Has adaptive drive, totally worth it. Wouldn't buy one without that option. MPG is 16.9 which isn't great obviously. For us, it's the best model choice even though it feels underpowered.

Adaptive drive is a great option! AD makes the car corner on rails and super comfy to cruise long distance.

I drove a '14 3.0i a few years back and it seemed to strain to get the e70 up to speed. From some research on tunes I understand that it can be made much more "drive-able" with a mild tune.
