2008 X5 E70 judder / shudder
 

My 2008 X5 3.0si judder/shudder at low RPM. diagnosed with 54C6 "VTG Oil wear" I changed the transfer case fluid, same issue.
Some told me to chick the transfer case actuator others told me to change the whole transfer case and others advised me to change the transmission converter which is big job.
could any one of guys faced the same issue advise me please?

Experiencing same issue with my 2012 e70, can feel also my idle being affected by the transmission when at a stop. After much diagnosing and trying a fluid change of the transmission and transfer case. Checking engine vitals. A trusted trans tech I know, has said it’s the torque converter. I’ll be pulling the transmission to swap out the converter in the next week. Will post if it resolves all the issues once I done.

How did you rule out the transfer case??

Thank you for sharing your experience. by the way a mechanic advised me the same to change the torque converter but I want to make sure of the alternator first as a faulty alternator can affect the transmission behavior. I will post what ever will happen with me

when a torque converter fails some symptoms are high torque multiplication stage shudder at low RPM
and overdrive 1:1 clutch engagement bangs.

You should do a search of other X5 forums, looking for "bad transfer case" (or similar key words)

Then compare those stories to your symptoms.


I recall someone, here or on bimmerfest that replaced the transmission (which holds the torque converter) only to find it actually WAS the transfer case. There have been a few Transfer Case reports as I recall

do you recall what the failure point in the case was ? i recall that updated xdrive had some sort of tech to infinitely vary the front vs rear axle torque, is this not true ?

I dont recall this. At least I am pretty sure the E70 does NOT have diffenrt xdrives designs/transfer cases. Taking a quick look, I saw the same functional description in the TIS for early and late x5s....

Guys, I started with the easiest one which is changing the trans fluid, and it worked. The car now is smooth finally.
it seems this car before I bought it sat for long time, therefore the fluid in the trans and torque converter was out of spec.
Thank you all for support and help, I would like to give you an advice regarding the label on the BMW trans says life time oil, don't take it serious, as it should be changed at least once every 60k mile / 100k km.
