Valve stems on N62 as preventive maintenance

does it make sense to replace the valve stems on an N62 even before they go bad since it's a question of when rather than if? What mileage should this be done at? Non-dealer cost to replace?

If you're in there for some reason, maybe.

Otherwise I'd say no. It's quite expensive from what I understand. It won't leave you stranded. It gives you warnings over time with smoke out of the exhaust. So since you have plenty of warning, just do it when you start to notice excessive smoke.

Seconded. :iagree:

You're looking at $4000-6000 non-dealer cost to do the VSS on an N62. Not a fun or easy job. I think book time is something like 30 hours? My memory sucks though, so could be off on the time.

I disagree. Looks like fun times.

;)

There is a kit made byAGA...DRASTICALLY cuts the time
https://agatools.com/products/aga-n62-vst-k-vk

you can rent it, like $180 for 2 weeks

Pros will do this in a day, 8 hrs. Drive the car to them on Friday. Done by Sat night, drive home Sunday.

Agree the BMW book time is silly, they didnt invent the tool when they wrote the book!

Hah! Our definition of fun is quite different. :)

Even with the AGA tool... which I intend to use when I finally break down and do mine, though I will remove the valvetronic for extra clearance. I don't consider it fun.

And yes, pros will use the tool... do it in a day and still charge $4000. The shop I was at certainly did.

The BMW time involves taking off the heads, which mostly explains the craziness.
