Adjusting Idle RPM?
 

I have a 2013 N55 X5 and when the car is at idle the RPM's dip a little bit not to the point of stalling but enough to create a slight vibration. Is there a way to adjust the idle RPM a little bit higher?

You should be able to adjust the idle a small amount in DIS or similar program.

I used my Foxwell NT510 Elite scan tool to change my idle speed, raising it by 50 rpm. I had thought that a little more rpms in the hottest weather would help with the A/C temperature inside, while sitting stopped at a light, but discovered that I didn't have the center vent setting to full cold, so that adjustmentt wasn't needed. I returned the idle to normal. Easy peasy.

Hello...I am having the same issue with my 2009 X5 and have recently purchased the Foxwell scanner you had referred to. Could you please walk me through the steps you used to adjust the idle speed from this scanner?

What specifically needs fixed?

I have a 2013 as well that does the same thing, and its runs flawlessly and has no codes, so its not clear to me what should be fixed.

Of the idle speed is not ok, then there is a problem, I could be just a small problem that doesn’t trow codes. Check for vacumleaks, how old are the sparkplugs, oilleaks from the valve cover, could also give false air. Check the oilfil cap. Also the inletmanifold has the seals that like to dry out.

The issue is that the idle speed dips and flutters down to almost 500 RPM on occasion. One time it did stall out when I was making a hard turn and braking into a parking lot. Spark plugs and coils were replaced approximately 40k miles ago, and I just replaced the air filter. I have checked for leaks all around, and have found nothing. The only service I have had recently at the BMW dealership is the replacement of the PCV valve heater under warranty around 4 months ago. However this issue has only cropped up within the past month or so. Lastly, the idle does increase slightly upon AC activation and seems to idle fine.

Mine has never died and it normally does it just when its cold. The coils, plug and valve cover gaskets were replace recently and I didn't' notice any difference in anything, including the idle. Personally, unless there is some obvious cause, or quick fix, doesn't make sense to invest much effort into addressing it given what a wild goose chase it would likely turn into. And given its a >10 year old car with >100k miles, it could be a lot of things, or more likely multiple things causing it, many of them not cheap to fix.

Thanx so much for your prompt responses, and I am totally on board with what you have to say! I have owned the vehicle since 2011 when it had only 36k miles...and with the current milage at 143k+, I really don't want to put too much time and expense into this situation since I seem to be running out of solutions on my own. That is why I inquired originally about the method of increasing the idle speed (even by 50 RPM) with the Foxwell unit...which may be the viable solution and "quick fix" that is needed.
