What other maintenance to have performed when getting engine mounts replaced?
 

Hi,

I need to have the engine mounts on my E70 (2009) replaced. Given that this is a big job, I'd like to know what other preventive maintenance is best to have done at the same time?

Somebody made a mention of getting the oil pan gasket replaced. What else?

Instead of gasket, get a new oil pan. Unfortunately I got the former done without getting the mounts replaced and they are a problem now. I got the transmission and differential fluids changed as well.

Is your location of Big D = Detroit? Where are you getting the mounts replaced and do you have a quote? Are you having it done or are you DIY? And which engine?

Pretty sure ours are bad on our 2008 N62 and I've been trying to figure out if it's DIYable or if I should just take it in. We're probably going to replace the X5 this spring/summer so also wondering if I should even bother.

Do you have any symptoms due to the bad motor mount while driving? Trying to figure out if it’s worth it to replace mine or not. One is blown.

There's a bit of vibration at idle. Actually the shop seemed to be trying to talk me out of it. Saying the vibration wasn't that bad and it's really expensive. From their inspection they said they did not appear to be broken, but "look" original so that would have been their first step towards addressing the vibration. I didn't have them do the work because they also diagnosed the A/C compressor as bad, and with other work, it was a $8600 repair bill so we'll probably just be buying another car.

Mounts on the M62 aren’t a bad job so I would assume they are the same on the N62. Definitely some work, but not very technical, nor do you need any BMW specific tools. Just multiple ratchet extensions, torx sockets, jack stands, floor jack and a way to pull the motor up an inch or two.

Drop the subframe a couple/few inches and lift the motor up a bit and you can get them out. Pulling the wheel well liner helps a lot too and isn’t cosmic either. You can replace the factory plastic rivets, or get the plastic push rivets you see used around the X5s if you don’t have a plastic rivet tool. Cheap on Amazon, and they come with an assortment of rivets. I’ve been using the push ones on my right rear liner for a year and they are holding fine.
