zf 6 speed trans

recently did trans tune up,07 x5 with 4.8,sealing,bridge seals, fluid ,pan filter,
etc. while I was in there it was obv. somebody was in there prior , to me !
the wire harness was dodgy with some "repairs" on it ! so I replaced the plug and about 2' of the actual wires in the harness, I found used on line !
the car drove fine for about 10 days, now when I put in gear, forward or reverse, the wheels rotate for almost a full rotation then it stops!!
I did the trans reset many times but no luck ! does anybody know what I should do next ?? I need help badly !!!
!

Might be a dumb question, but what did you do about transmission fluid? (what type did you use, how did you refill, etc)

^ Good question.

If tranny is underfilled bad things can happen

OP- any prior tranny issues that triggered you to do the tune up????

fillmoho 11-02-2023 09:24 AM

I used the valveline fluid !
had no prior issue with trans ! forgot to mention I also cleaned solinoids when on bench !

You used Valvoline but what about the level? There is a specific procedure for checking and topping off the fluid level.

Hard to know what you might have done....

But again as has been mentioned- HOW you filled the tranny can result in issues.

Also, do you have BMW software to read tranny codes??

fillmoho 11-02-2023 06:56 PM

no I don't have any software but looking to get !
I did do the proper filling procedure with filling let in run forward reverse etc. than checked after a few days was down mayb half quart?
what's the best software? to suite my needs?

The car needs to be perfectly level. You need to run the ATF to achieve a specific temperature range. THEN add fluid until it just drips out the hole.

Adding too much or too little can cause the trans to enter a failsafe.

BMW software like inpa or ista.

We are shooting in the dark here- it really is going to need some careful digging on your part. Id look to see if there are any tranny error codes...then carefully check the fluid level again...and then, if it still a problem, drop the solenoids and look to see if you dislodged something, got an oring wrong, etc

Sorry.....

Also..

To add to the above that vehicle is level, fluid to temp spec, and fluid is dripping (not constant stream) from the level setting plug: engine needs to be running and trans in neutral. All above are critical. If engine not running while checking oil stream for drips you will be way off. Probably low and you could pop out of gear as the control circuits lose prime as low oil sloshes around the pickup, especially on hills, etc.

This is for the 8 speed, but the procedure is the same for basically all BMW transmissions...
