*HELP* 2013 X5 40d knock/rattle

Hi all!

Out on a drive over the weekend, seemingly out of nowhere my engine began to rattle quite loudly in-sync with the rpm.

The cars performance didn’t seem to change, and no engine warnings are present. Returned home and parked up until I can diagnose, or tow to a mechanic.

I have shared footage of the engine noise to a few people (one being a mechanic) and both had opinions that varied from timing chain to con-rods. Need some further opinions to know what I’m in for.

Note - I am in Newcastle, Australia.

The mechanic told me that I would not get much change from $10k AUD for the timing chain repairs, and if it were the con-rods, I’d be looking at a new engine. Does this sound correct? Very disappointed either way, but if that’s what it is, then that’s what it is!

Appreciate any guidance 😊

Look for copper fleck in the oil and look for silver fleck in the oil filter.

Seems like rod knock and if caught early enough it's not a terminal disease.

Doesn't sound timing chain at all but does have a strong tap vs. knock sound so could be a stuck cam follower (what used to be called a lifter in the 20th century).

Use a stethoscope to determine if it's just one cylinder and if it's topside or bottom side.

Last thought: had a buddy with breakout identical sound on a gas powered X5 it was a loose spark plug.

Appreciate the advice,

I’ve just moved cities, so it’s helpful to have some knowledge before dealing with a new local mechanic, as I haven’t had the best of treatment over the years. I will likely have it towed to a local shop tomorrow for diagnosis. All of my fingers are crossed for it to be kind, but ready for some bad news.
