Ditched the runflats, and life is so much better. What do you run?
 

I got rid of the Michelin Latitude runflats that came with the car when I bought it used and replaced them with Kumho SOLUS 4S HA32 all-weather tires (which, unlike all-season tires, behave respectably in snow and ice) and it is SO much better. The ride is way quieter and smoother, and I don't have to keep a separate set of wheels and tires stored to swap over for the winter. We have AMA, so if we get a flat we can get a tow and the noise reduction and ride improvement every day are worth some inconvenience if/when we get a puncture.



Just curious - how many of you use runflats and how many don't? Has anyone switched away from runflats and gone back to them?

I was very very happy the few times i relied on run flat top drive to a convenient location to install my spare or in one case just drive home on the flat which was already destroyed.

My current car came with non run flat and I did get two flats inside of three months but on trips I keep a compressor and no tool Viktor speed plugs which have worked about five times to drive until it was convenient to get a proper patch.

I usually have 600-700# in my trunk so I was always ok with the stiffer sidewalls of the Dunlop Winter sport with the combination of the softer compound never noticed a stiff ride.

That said it's far more difficult to get run flat at a reasonable price and with tpms to tell me if I have a puncture and roadside with my car insurance I'm ok with either option but more than likely I'll be using non run flat forever now.

Expensive at Amazon about 60% less at Menards if you live in the Midwest.

I've helped people out on random parking lots I've never had them not worth and though they are meant for "maybe 100 miles". I've used at least one for maybe 3000 miles when my tires were getting near end of life.

I ditched the runflats to ( 275 front 315 rear on 20 inch) the road noise is lesser, a bit more comfort, but I can notice that taking a long curve at high speed and pushing, that the walls are less stiff, also it looks like the car uses a bit lesser fuel.

The is a lot more choice in non runflat tires, I now have Bridgestone turanza 6 XL.
Looked at noise, quality on wet, and fuel use.( still 1000 euro’s for a set of 4 including replacement)

I used run flats for a couple of years, but ditched them with the last set of new tires and just made sure I had some emergency tire maintenance tools in the back.

I would agree that I've noticed a slight increase in body roll (X doesn't fell as 'planted' in sharp corners), but I'm not driving the Nürburgring either. Can't tell any real difference in noise, but that might be my own personal hearing (or lack thereof).

Used Pirelli Scorpion RF for a long time until recently switching to Bridgestone Alenza as I couldn't pass up on the price at the time. Happy with my choice so far.

Solus HA32? What size tire? What load rating?

Just got a G05 with continental run flats, amd I’m a bit worried about a blow out. My first set of run flat tires and I don’t know if they can be trusted to do the job, since I have zero experience with them. No choice however since the battery takes up 2/3s of the underfloor space in the back.

Michelin ps4s, overkill but the ride is still decent with 20s.

You really don't need to worry about a blow out. If there's a catastrophic failure you'll still be able to drive to the next town to deal with finding a replacement tire.

Many (many) years ago I broke a rim on a pothole in my M5. A 90 mile tow and two nights in a hotel, I have had a full size tire in the trunk for the last 240k miles. Turns a flat from a multi-hour event, goop, calling AAA..., into a 'ill just use the handy wipes after I change the tire in 10 minutes"
