X5 E70 M57 stalling:fuel pump error
Greetings!
My E70 3.0D M57 173kw has been acting weird lately. Whenever my fuel tank goes below 1/2 it will randomly stall. Sometimes after starting up, when driving on low rpm or when cornering in city speed. I have read online, watched countless hours on youtube. So far I have done everything that solves the problems for others but mine keeps doing that. I have done the following things: *Replaced EKPS unit *Replaced low pressure fuel pump *Cleaned the tank and the little mesh filter under the LPFP *Cleaned the suction jet pump and hoses on the left side of tank *Replaced the fuel filter *Checked all the wiring around LPFP In Autel diagnostics low fuel pressure is 2.5bar when ignition is off and 4 bar when it's on. In the secret menu of the instrument cluster under test 6.00 I have 30liters on the left side of the tank and 1 to 8 liters on the right one. It's jumping when driving. What else to look for ? I am totally exhausted. Please help ! |
On my E39, when the jet pump failed, I would run out of gas at ~40%. There was gas in one side but the jet wouldnt pump it across....
Are you sure the jet pump is OK? |

On the e 53 the jet pump fails when a dream opens up and gas comes out the side.
I've rebuilt a few of them. My e 70 isn't as old but i don't know if BMW fixed the m design defect that causes the issue. Three symptoms almost exactly match jet pump failure. If on level ground the right side drops below ≈ 1.4L that's the tell. On the e 53 the transition point is about 27L left it seems far too coincidental that you're at 30. The tanks are different so that might be the transition point. I can pull up test six and learn what the normal values are for the e 70. I "wow the book" on the e 53 fuel transfer when i fixed both of ours they both failed exactly the same way. The 53 has a much more lopsided tank with left much bigger. It also has a deep well for the pump on the right side and holds zero L of fuel on the right after the transition point. There's a lot for me to learn on the 70 before i can rule with authority but if the transition point of breaking left from right is 30L, odds are nearly 100% jet pump failure. Thank you. Very interesting. What do you mean with this ? ((On the e 53 the jet pump fails when a dream opens up and gas comes out the side.)) ?? |
Typo: seam.
https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...p-details.html All the details are there I was able to pull up my test six today and e 70 works very differently from e 53. The tank appears to be more like the sedans where both sides are similar in size vs. left being much bigger, also i need to look into it but it seems like no pump well which is definitely a downgrade. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e01d58d996.jpg 5.4 left 31.6 right. I would say almost for sure you have a transfer pump problem. i’m very close to empty on the left side. I will drive enough today. That should be zero and then I can see if all the fuel stays on the right side after the transition point. |

OMG!! I am sooo dumb. I was thinking that this is how you read the tank. 🫣🫣🫣 |
Is that your car? 31 L right should be normal but watch the numbers while driving if they don't move you might have a stuck level sender etc.

I just put in more gas because I have to drive further away tomorrow. I am now seeing this. Does this mean that the siphon jet pump ir working OK ? |
OK this wasn't the problem. We took out all 6 injectors. Took them to the test. 5 were good. 1 was bought new Bosch. New rail pressure sensor. Still no luck. Car starts only with 2-3 attempts.
