BMW Rep Says E70 Spy Shots "Dead Wrong"

Dealer sales manager said that BMW has mules in Miami and that the factory rep mentioned that all the spy shots floating around are nothing like what the final product is going to look like. Rep only confirmed that the E70 will be longer, wider, and taller...just thought I would pass this on.

Thanks!

Do you really trust that your dealer knows anything about the E70; better yet anything about BMW's at all? Some sales people are the dumbest people around... With no knowledge of the product that are pressuring to sell. The only thing they really know is the "are you going to buy today" question. I really don't want to get started on ignorant sales people. I would have so much to say.

This info was coming from a BMW N.A. person...and I think it is safe to assume that a company spending untold millions on a launch would control and orchestrate the reveal--just because we see something on Auto Bild does not make it accurate....

interestingly enough, I was in the dealer's looking at an exact 2006 copy of my 2004...the dealer actually suggested that since I own outright my 2004 and there is no support for the 2006 models, rather than do a lease, wait 12 months--I will still have a car under warranty to trade or sell, will have saved $9-10K in lease payments, and after 9 months' production, can consider a 2007 E70 after actually having seen the real thing.

EMIRATES_GUY 06-11-2006 06:27 AM

non of the spy pictures look like the 2007 X5 ?!!!!!!

it might be a change in the shape but not a big change :)

scott27 06-11-2006 08:40 AM

Yes, some digitally manipulated spy pics & CG impressions are indeed dead wrong in some details. But they show the overall shape very well though.

The problem with pre-FEP prototypes spy pics is the heavy plastic cladding which hides the new sheet metal almost completely (expect the roof and part of a hood), while the FEP prototypes are camouflaged by tape so the design details are hidden. Therefore all spy pics lack the depth & crisp of the real unmasked car.

When the official pics hit the media in a few weeks you'll see all the details and all the E70's aggressiveness which is even more present when you see the car in person.

Wait wait we have a few people on X5 that actually saw the E70 and confirmed already what it looked like and its almost exactly like the Spy shots.....

True, and I thought about this as well, but how do we confirm this? And how do we know BMW N.A. folks aren't trying to throw folks off the scent?

Longer, taller, and wider, we know...but let's hope the final reveal knocks our socks off.

Well the latest shots of the X5 just with black tape is plenty releaving.

I remember when I was waiting for the new 5-series to come out, the final revealing spyshots were of a white 5-series also all taped up in black tape. But the whole thing was exactly as the final product.

I think the same will go with the X5. It's only logical.

One thing still does bother me though...at certain angles, the rear quarter windows really do look absolutely tiny. I mean, I just don't see why they made them so tiny if the vehicle is to be stretched by half a foot...

It makes the whole rear of the vehicle look tiny!

Its because the rear doors are much longer to accomodate the third row seat

What did you mean when you said there is no support for the 2006 X5.

AlpineMsix 06-12-2006 01:46 AM

so ur tellin me that, aall the spy shots that are actually taken in Cali or taken on actual city streets, is some other CAR COMPANY wit x5 "looking" mules?

No lease incentives--apparently (and this could be complete BS) they don't have an inventory problem as far as E53s are concerned. Dealer told me lease deals were actually better last year.

U R talkin' to me?

If I understand your question, no. This thread stems from what a BMW N.A. area rep in Florida passed along, thus the reference to Miami; Miami being in Florida I made the connection almost immediately.

I would have to guess that the mules in other parts of the country are very much BMW products...it is unlikely they are Skodas. :)

No. The What it means is that the photos floating around either show test mules with styling that is not meant for production or photoshops that bear little respemblance to the production models.

scott27 06-12-2006 04:28 PM

Again: the shape will be same as we see it on tapped prototypes. That's final design. But due tape the details are not clearly seen.

IMO the BMW NA rep. was talking about CGIs & spy pics of heavily plastic cladded prototypes which indeed did not show the design - just a silhuette.

It's now official. Your dealer is a MORON. I'm also curious what you mean by no support for 2006 X5's. Can't quite wrap my brain around that one.

fln8tive 06-12-2006 11:47 PM

The local dealer must be doing something right...they just built about 4 acres of parking decks to hold all their inventory and they have two satellite service centers.

OK, so they can't sell me the correct $2.00 part in spite of the guiding hands at x5world...They are, at the very least, very successful morons.

See prior response regarding "support". And check out Post #68 on http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e70-forum/...y-shots-7.html It appears that another person is finding that BMW is not making a big push to blow these E53s out.

I was told exactly the same thing by a sales manager here in L.A. about a month and half ago who also cited a factory rep as his source. I posted my "revelation" back then - very close to what you've posted here.

I'm now wondering if this is some precanned BMW spiel that we're getting spoonfed. Very clever, indeed.

You are probably right....the E70 will likely get panned at first, then six months later we'll all be lining up to get one and yanking the third row seats to install some woofer from hell...:)
