The model ranges overlap somewhat, but the branding concept is that you start at the one series, and end at the seven series. |

BMW felt last time around that an SUV could never have the same raw M appeal that the M cars offer. With that being said, the head of M had said in an interview recently that E70's M version is already in stage 2 (evaluation) of the 4 stages a BMW takes to manufacturing. The 4.8is was almost an M car. Very close but no cigar. The real M car of the E53 lineup was the X5 LeMans Concept - however as we all know the M X5 never came to fruition... scott's already gone into this... either way we will see at least an 'is', but maybe we'll get lucky and get an M this time... |
"is" or "M", I just hope they make it as fast, if not faster, than their competitors. Even the AMG version of the RL is reportedly faster than the current "is" model. Granted it probably doesn't handle as well, but who wants to be beaten by Suzy Homemaker on her way to the supermarket?

Interesting that you mention the 8. The 8 was also a BMW that never was made under 'M' trim. However some 850Csi's (if not all of them) got full M trim, minus the M badge (engine, interior, door sills, etc...). |
I heard the new top model X5 will be an IS not an M. and it will have a 5.0 liter twin turbo pushing out 500hp and 500lbs of torque. It will hit 0to60 in under 5 sec for sure. Top speed 185 limited to 155.
as far as single turbos bmw will definately never do a single turbo because of the extra turbo lag associated with a single turbo. The entire idea of this new twin turbo motor and brand new design was to totally eliminate all turbo lag. Drive the 335i and you will know what i mean. You cant even hear the turbos and there is no lag what so ever. Bottom end torque is what the X5 needs and the twin turbos will deliver tons of it right off idle. Its gonna haul ass for sure. |

Just priced out both a ML500 and a 4.4i and there's about a $5-6K difference in price between two comparably equipped SUVs, with the ML being the more expensive of the two. That said, the ML63 starts at around $86K, fully loaded at around $98K, so BMW probably will probably price the new "is" around there to be competitive.

If the bi-turbo V8 is going to debut in 2008 on the new 7 series how is the 4.8is going to be out at the end of 07?
