Which X5?
I am finally breaking down and selling my LandRover Disco1 and decided to look very seriously at the X5. I live in Michigan so we do get quite a bit of snow and I primarily want the car for winters as I have a Boxster S for the summer. So with the snow in mind, which X5 should I get? I don't do that many miles...maybe 4K a year so the fuel usage is not an issue. Is the X5 3,0 heavier enough or should I go with the 4.4? Also, I noticed reading the threads that quite a few people put snow tires on suggesting these cars don't handle too well in cold weather?
Appreciate anyone's input. Gary |
i think it's a matter of taste and budget.
maybe for you a 3.0 would be enough...however, knowing what i know now (through this forum) i would have gotten a 4.4...but i just like speed and cant afford the 4.8. lol |
Can't help you on the snow question, but my 4.4 does great in the sand. You will love the X5.

Its your personal preference. If you don't want powerful engine than 3.0 should be good enough.
X5 does handle good in snow. Most people who put snow tires do that because they have 20" performance tires. Having 2 separate tires/wheel sets allows you to enjoy in summer with performance tires and play in snow with winter tires. Winter tires grip like studs in snow. :xoutpost: |
If you're talkin the new 07 X5, there is no 4.4i. There's the 3.0si and the 4.8i and basically it depends on the power and level of equipment you need. If you start finding yourself piling on a lot of options like premium package and content that's otherwise standard on the 4.8i, then get the V8. If you're just looking for something like sport package and not much else, then go with the 3.0si.

sport pkg on the 3.0i requires premium first

Thanks for the comments
Looks like the 3.0 will be fine...maybe I'll invest in some snow tires.

Gwinder,
If you are looking used, grab a MY that has XDrive; I think it's '04 on... The 3.0 hauls azz and pulls well. V8 does it even better, but if you are not trailering or don't "need" the extra grunt, the IL 3.0 is a lot of motor. GR/western MI, gets its share of snow, though one of my best friends runs around GR/Pentwater area in an X3 with std tires and XDrive. If you are doing serious snow running or, want the extra security and bite, a set of snows will make your X billygoat-like, imo. GL,mD |
