Newbie question about voice command

Hi! Purchased a 2007 X5 (E70) w/o nav last December and have a question about the voice command.

I was told that without the Nav system, the voice command only works for phone functions. This is because the module that controls the other systems is included there. Is this true? If it is, is there a separate VR module available to control the other functions... rather than getting the whole nav system instead?

'Tis my first time to own a BMW so I'd really appreciate your inputs! Thanks! :D

:wavey::xoutpost::wavey:

voice control can control numerous commands for the nav

Thanks for the super-fast reply! Currently, my voice control can command the phone functions but nothing else. I do not have a nav system to command, but it'll be nice to command the other functions like radio, climate control, etc...

what happens when you hit the voice button and say a radio command?
commands are in the manual.
Oh, and :welcome:

the new super-fast responces are a new x5world convenience :D......

thanks for the welcome! :wavey:

when i hit the voice button and say a radio command, the system just says "sorry" then turns off after a few more tries. if i say "help", then the voice prompt gives me the phone options... this portion works

the manual shows a lot of short commands, but none of them work when i try to use. dealer's mechanic thinks that i need the nav system to access the short commands, otherwise i can only use phone. this doesn't give me any comfort, so i'm asking around about it. wanna make sure that my situation is not a defect.

the car feels and drives good, no doubt. just want to make the most out of the features it offers.

maybe you do need nav to get the full commands available...that sucks...it's available but the limited it

Lack of Voice Command

I was wondering about this also...my experience is the same..no NAVI in my E70...VC seems to only function w/phone...bummer! :cussing:

i guess it's confirmed...if you do not have nav, voice controls are limited to the phone...unfortunately...

The standard radio and the one from the NAV are different, that's probably why...

true, but it seems like it's only a larger screen, some additional hardware, and a software upgrade :dunno:

Bartk 02-14-2007 05:54 AM

nope, radio module is completely different. With standard radio all is mounted in the front, with nav the front only has a screen with controls and a CD or K7 player, the radio module and NAV module are then mounted in the boot. The radio module is also HW wise completely different.

good to know

and what's a K7 player?

rufusdedog 02-14-2007 06:58 AM

Without Nav, just push the voice button and

say "help". The system will tell you the commands it recognizes. Hope this helps!

Cassette player :-)
Comes actually from the french K sept (7=sept in french), it's an abriviation we use over here

trueX5er 02-14-2007 09:18 AM

so maybe a software hack can allow you to use at least one or two later on...

Bartk 02-14-2007 09:26 AM

no, from the moment the NAV system is installed and coded the SES (voice moodule) will recognise the hardware and will enable the functions. With the standard radio this can never be enabled since the radio itself is not compatible with these voice commands.

bey168 02-14-2007 11:00 AM

wow... great inputs! that confirms it then, voice command for phone only if you don't have nav. i now have peace of mind while driving. thanks guys!
