Dumb Question...HUD and Sunglasses...
 

It has been mentioned on this board that you cannot see the HUD while wearing polarized sunglasses.
Can someone define polarized? Are most glasses made this way? I have a pair of RayBans- would they likely be polarized?

My RayBans do not allow me to see the HUD. They are prescription.

You ask if most sunglasses are made this way? The answer is "NO" MOST sunglasses are not made polarized, but MANY sunglasses are polarized.

When you walk into a store to buy glasses, polarized are usually advertized as such. If your not sure about your glasses, chances are they are not polarized as you didn't pay the extra bucks for it.

I have some VERY expensive sunglasses that are not polarized and some cheaper models that are polarized. So you can't exactly go by price.
You have to think of polarized glasses as a niche. They serve a specific purpose like a watch with a chrono.

If you spend a lot of time near the water, boating, etc., polarized are a must. Same with snow skiing if you use googles. It helps visibility.
But it also can put a very strange appearance on things like LED's.

They also change the contrast of the sky, horizon, etc.

Did you ever take a photography class? Remember when you tried to take a picture in a store window. You developed the picture and all you saw was yourself in the glass taking a picture? Well, a polarized filter on a lens allows you to take pictures through the glass of the merchandise on display.. but that's just an example.

My polarized Maui Jims didn't work with HUD. :dunno: I now have regular ray bans. :thumbup:

Actually when I first noticed the problem, I thought the HUD was broken...I freaked out for several minutes flipping thru the IDrive until I discovered it was my new perscription glasses.
