Option 6FL - USB Connection
Do you know if with the option 6FL of BMW (USB connection we can command a MP3 reader with the steering wheel, the car radio and the iDrive and to show the name of songs, artists on the screen of the GPS?
|
Yes it can. $400 retail. Available from 04/01 on.

Thank you very much. As my X5 is going to be delivered to me in May, I shall make this option rise in accessory. |
My understanding was that the iPod interface for $400 was for iPod's only (allowing you to control the iPod and get the iPod menus through the factory radio/iDrive, etc..).
There is also an auxilary plug for other MP3 players, separate of the iPod interface, and that AUX connection does not work through the radio controls/iDrive, etc... You would control the MP3 through the MP3 itself. |
No, this is not correct, the 6FL option works with Ipods and other usb devices.

I guess that makes sense, since they call it the "iPod/USB adapter." Sorry for the confusion. Bad info from a salesman, surprise, surprise..........

Can anybody say to me if the USB Connection (option 6FL) is compatible with the CD changer?
Can we connect in parallel the USB connection and the CD changer then use 2? Either the USB connection USB (option 6FL) makes compulsory the abolition of the CD changer CD? |
He was likly refereing to the AUX input that is standard on the E70 (in the center console)...which allows an audio only connection to the stereo. I am currently using this for my Ipod, and yes I have to control the Ipod from the device itself.
The 6FL option add a USB connection to this input which allows full control of the Ipod or certain other MP3 devices. |
The 6FL option does not interfere w/ the CD changer.

Can this USB connection USB (Option 6F) have risen in accessory by BMW after delivery of the vehicle or is it available only during the order of the vehicle?
I live in France. Mon X5 is going to be delivered in May and it is thus too late to modify my order.... |

As my X5 must be delivered to me in France before the end of May, it means that it's in production or taken out of factory! |

True. I was going more on my salesman (actually the GM of the dealership who sold me mine) saying they'd let me know, but you're right, better to do it yourself also.
Hopefully it was a pleasant surprise for you, as opposed to missing out on some changes you wanted to make and couldn't. |

Just noticed this today on Realoem. The first BMW strangely calls "Radio Adapter Tubing" but it must have something to do with the new USB adapter. Too bad there is no part number listed yet. The second is even more interesting... the elusive Aux Input / USB adapter ! Again, too bad BMW lists no information on it.

This makes me wonder if the cable is already in place on the earlier 2007 models. If that is the case it looks like all we will need is to replace the "TV/Audio Plug Socket" module and get the cable...and possibly a software update.

Good question. Check this out (just found it). It is listed for the new 3 series, 1 series, and a few others (no mention X3's or X5's). But it does clearly state from 3/2007.
