Option 6FL - USB Connection

Do you know if with the option 6FL of BMW (USB connection we can command a MP3 reader with the steering wheel, the car radio and the iDrive and to show the name of songs, artists on the screen of the GPS?

Yes it can. $400 retail. Available from 04/01 on.

Thank you very much.

As my X5 is going to be delivered to me in May, I shall make this option rise in accessory.

chris24 04-02-2007 10:18 AM

My understanding was that the iPod interface for $400 was for iPod's only (allowing you to control the iPod and get the iPod menus through the factory radio/iDrive, etc..).

There is also an auxilary plug for other MP3 players, separate of the iPod interface, and that AUX connection does not work through the radio controls/iDrive, etc... You would control the MP3 through the MP3 itself.

X5FX 04-02-2007 10:24 AM

No, this is not correct, the 6FL option works with Ipods and other usb devices.

chris24 04-02-2007 10:28 AM

I guess that makes sense, since they call it the "iPod/USB adapter." Sorry for the confusion. Bad info from a salesman, surprise, surprise..........

CS6913 04-02-2007 10:30 AM

Can anybody say to me if the USB Connection (option 6FL) is compatible with the CD changer?

Can we connect in parallel the USB connection and the CD changer then use 2?

Either the USB connection USB (option 6FL) makes compulsory the abolition of the CD changer CD?

X5FX 04-02-2007 10:32 AM

He was likly refereing to the AUX input that is standard on the E70 (in the center console)...which allows an audio only connection to the stereo. I am currently using this for my Ipod, and yes I have to control the Ipod from the device itself.

The 6FL option add a USB connection to this input which allows full control of the Ipod or certain other MP3 devices.

X5FX 04-02-2007 10:33 AM

The 6FL option does not interfere w/ the CD changer.

Can this USB connection USB (Option 6F) have risen in accessory by BMW after delivery of the vehicle or is it available only during the order of the vehicle?

I live in France. Mon X5 is going to be delivered in May and it is thus too late to modify my order....

My X5 goes into production sometime this week or so (whenever April production starts). If you haven't already, you should check with your salesman, I have not yet gotten the call that it's about to change to the status where it the order can't be changed yet. I just changed my order on friday to add the active ventilated seats.

All right but to come in Europe, 6 weeks ago of transport by boat....

As my X5 must be delivered to me in France before the end of May, it means that it's in production or taken out of factory!

Good point. Mine should be delivered in May as well, but forgot to look to see where you were for transport........... I'm still used to it the other way around (car coming here from Europe).

I'd urge you to stay on top of your order yourself. Mine went to status 112 ("Order Scheduled for Production," at which point no changes can be made) without any notification from my CA. If I hadn't been calling the 800 number I would never have known about it. In fact I stopped by at the dealership on Friday to pick up some forms related to PCD and asked my CA to check on my order while I was there -- to my surprise it had gone into production already, a week ahead of schedule!

chris24 04-02-2007 12:20 PM

True. I was going more on my salesman (actually the GM of the dealership who sold me mine) saying they'd let me know, but you're right, better to do it yourself also.

Hopefully it was a pleasant surprise for you, as opposed to missing out on some changes you wanted to make and couldn't.

Well, I dithered for quite a while about one thing and another; but by the time I found out I couldn't make any changes I was pretty sure I had things the way I want them. I'll know when I get to drive it!

I believe I've seen others on here say they were able to get it dealer installed as an accessory after production, but I'm not positive. Do a search in the forum and you should find something if no-one responds with better information in this thread.

I think there is alot of confusion here...noone has actually confirmed that they had a dealer install the 6FL option. Several people have stated they had the dealer install the "Ipod" option after the fact, but when asked if this was actually the 6FL option or just the older CD Changer option they never respond. I doubt anyone has had the 6FL option installed to an existing vehicle, except of course the new deliveries we are hearing about.

Thanks a lot for these precisions....

The salesmen from BMW are not capable of answering me....

Just noticed this today on Realoem. The first BMW strangely calls "Radio Adapter Tubing" but it must have something to do with the new USB adapter. Too bad there is no part number listed yet. The second is even more interesting... the elusive Aux Input / USB adapter ! Again, too bad BMW lists no information on it.

X5FX 04-06-2007 11:28 AM

This makes me wonder if the cable is already in place on the earlier 2007 models. If that is the case it looks like all we will need is to replace the "TV/Audio Plug Socket" module and get the cable...and possibly a software update.

Good question. Check this out (just found it). It is listed for the new 3 series, 1 series, and a few others (no mention X3's or X5's). But it does clearly state from 3/2007.
