Panoramic Sunroof- a must?

I have a few days left before confirming my specs ahead of my June delivery . I had left the Pano sunroof out until late last week mainly because my wife wasn't convinced about it. I kind of like sunroofs in general but have been not so interested in them in my 2 last cars .
My question is what do you guys think about the pano sunroof? Most of the board members who have taken delivery seem to have that option. My main concern is besides the cost it will be closed most of the times as when sunny (a rare occurence arguably here in the UK) the interior gets too hot and bright. Also it prevents from installing a better RSE in the ceiling as the OEM system is just poor, since I also have comfort seats, options are very limited on that front.
On the plus side, on the very many overcast days here it makes for nice natural light in the car, especially with the black headliner...
All in I am still on the fence, I have selected very many options so my 3.0D is right now at £55k....
Any views/opinions much appreciated
Thanks

C

Yes. A must - in my opinion. My wife agrees.
The sunroof is huge.

I love mine...it always gets comments from passangers. But the truth is I rarely use it. It is a very nice option for the few time I do use it though.
It allows alot of light in when it is a dark day...but the kids dont like it open as its hard to see the TV in the back seat.

I am not a big sunroof fan but the pano sunroof on the X5 is amazing. I love it - even when it's raining you can open the cover. I recommend it. The only thing I do not like is when it's open and I'm in the freeway, you hear this loud bumping sound and must roll down one of your windows to get rid of it.

You can get that sound just by having windows open the wrong ways too... I wouldn't consider that an issue related to the sunroof, just normal airflow.

I love mine. I keep the cover open all the time. It brightens up the interior even on gray days. It's great on sunny days. I open the roof even in winter.

I owned the E53 without a pan roof, now I have ordered the E70 with the pan roof having seen both, now the X has arrived but not collected. I would recommend the roof it may be a bit more to part with but you get the open feel and light regardless of the sun looks great.

I would also think it would certainly help with resale and maybe a bit on the residual it would certainly make it more desirable to any prospective buyers especially if they are choosing between a few up for sale.

So I would say get it.

X5Jay 04-09-2007 03:36 PM

I agree with all the above posts, but I like to have mine open mostly at night. There's just something cool about cruising under the stars. I also just tilt it open (opens in two places) quite often as it allows for a comfortable airflow without too much noise. Go for it!

X5_2_OBX 04-09-2007 04:17 PM

Yet another "I agree!" post. There's really no question, in my opinion. It is awesome!

trueX5er 04-09-2007 05:51 PM

I love mine!

(L, does the late E53 have the same exact roof? I think there have to be minor changes....)

chris24 04-09-2007 05:54 PM

I would say get the sunroof and get the DVD's in the headrest. IMO, that's a better viewing angle than coming down from the ceiling anyway and the roof is very cool.

xnsf 04-09-2007 05:56 PM

if you don't like the sunroof, that means you probably won't use it if you have it...

that means: hang the RES on the glass :nanana:

it'll look like it's floating

kirkX5m 04-09-2007 06:05 PM

i had a loaner the other day w/ pan sunroof too and yes its great; i did notice a lot of wind noises from the roof when fully opened though...it had to only be opened 1/2 way for the wind noise to be gone...

rufusdedog 04-09-2007 07:48 PM

Sunoof is fantastic!

Normally, you would expect a sunroof to increase body flex. Not so on the X5.

AzNMpower32 04-09-2007 07:57 PM

Absolutely one of the best features. Plus, the vent features is neat on a hot day, where you don't have to open the shade but a small vent opens in between the shade "pieces" in addition to the two glass pieces tilting. This prevents sunlight from coming in, but lets hot air out.

Oh and it is the single fastest way to cool down your car. Just open it all the way after you get in. Faster than AC, I promise.

Not so on the E70...

So there's no two-piece sunshade?

I access this mode when the shade and moonroof are full closed, then I just push the moonroof switch. The shade parts in the middle, and the moonroof tilts up.

trueX5er 04-09-2007 08:41 PM

hmmm....in the E70, once you push up when the shade is retracted, the two sections tilt up, so the rear part of both sections are raised. Press the button in again, and the shade (1 piece) closes, but stops about an inch or two short, only allowing fresh air in, but blocking sun. Same goal, different way.

Love mine, had in E53 as well as in E70.KEEP IT OPEN all the time.
Terrific option.Alex

X5FX 04-09-2007 09:20 PM

wow...sounds unanimous.
I opened mine up on the way home tonight, and really enjoyed it.

rooster328 04-09-2007 09:21 PM

have it, never used it

I have no idea....I love it and I can't imagine it could be improved. I get in a car without a pano roof and the roof looks wimpy..

cpd1 04-10-2007 03:20 AM

Wow guys...
That as close as unanimity I have ever seen... Thanks very much for all the replies, very helpful. I have added the pano sunroof to my order, I do agree in terms of resale it prob will help a bit anyway.
I assume that none of you have had any rattle issue or any other mechanical issue with the roof?
Finally last question, just wanted to double check with the shade in place, the roof is completely closed?
Thanks v much for your help

xnsf 04-10-2007 03:24 AM

there have been problems with leaks...
the shade closes all the way...

are you not ordering the premium package and just ordering the panoramic roof a la carte?

cpd1 04-10-2007 03:28 AM

Unfortunately in the UK everything is expensive and a la carte no package except Media pkg (Pro sat NAva+Bluetooth+ Changer+ Assist) and Dynamic Pkg (Leather power sport seats, Tinted windows, Black Headliner, High Gloss). Wish I could have the US pkgs with US prices over here for sure....

xnsf 04-10-2007 03:35 AM

ohhh....so what are you planning on getting?

cpd1 04-10-2007 04:20 AM

Pretty much everything that was on offer
Ex Adaptive Drive and DVD player at the back. Even got the parked car heating system, bit of a waste of money but that's for the chilly days when I can't be bothered to put the car in the garage, it will be a tight fit anyway, so better tell the wife to leave it out to avoid costly repairs...
Re DVD player, it is too compromised, will look into a headrest system but with comfort seats, it will be tricky...

Thanks Thinson, I first saw it on the BMW Canada website and there was a thread about it few weeks ago. It could be an option, I just hope the screens don't move out too much. However to keep the fully functioning headrests with the comfort seats that is the only solution I have seen so far. It is similar to the Individual system offered here in the UK on some BMW. Last I checked it was £4000 for a 5 series, now you know why BMW is one of the most profitable car manufacturers in the world
BMW 5 series Individual

chris24 04-10-2007 08:45 AM

I really wish we had the BMW Individual options here in the US..........

Those have to be the ugliest things I have ever seen!

I'm looking for a 04/05 X, and a must have for me is the panorama roof.
So get it.

One last question about the Panoramic Sunroof, any complaints about rattles or more noise at speed?
Thx

None here. Maybe, sometimes when it gets really really cold I hear some creaking...

X5FX 04-13-2007 09:05 AM

I've never heard a peep.

Slalom 04-13-2007 10:15 AM

None hear --I mean here.

cpd1 04-13-2007 10:22 AM

Thanks guys. It is just as well, spoke to the dealer car now locked into production so cannot change it anymore.
Panoramic Sunroof is in tho :)
