Engine Warning Lamp
I have just over 1200 KM on my E70 4.8i and today the engine warning lamp came on for the second time. I took it in for service after the first time, as there were some other issues, but I forgot to ask what the cause was when I picked it up. Today it came on again while driving. Service was closed, but I got a hold of my sales guy who said that it could be a vast number of things, but that it should be OK to keep driving until the service dept. opens again next week.
Does anyone have any insight into this? I already checked the fuel cap which I understand could sometimes be a cause. |
It was a bad oxygen sensor on mine. It can be many things, inclusive of the gas cap issue you noted.
Mine had less than 150 miles on it when it came on. Actually, the first time it came on was when I bought it. Joel |
Just back from service. Apparently it was a loose spring in the gas cap. The cap was replaced. Hopefully that was REALLY the issue and the light doesn't come back on. 3 service visits in 17 days of ownership is not good! (I will post more details when I get around to my X5 photo shoot.)

Yours turns off, mine turns on again. I'm livid. I just do not have the time to deal with issues like this. So, back to the dealer it goes---again.
We have pretty good lemon laws here in CA. I hope I don't have to invoke them. I think it is not a reasonable thing to have to take a car back so many times. I have less than 300 miles on the car, and after 12 days of ownership, the dealer will have had it 5. Joel |
My other concern is that I don't think that they are making any record of these service calls, as they just hand me the keys and send me on my way with no paperwork. I think I'll send a message to the service manager.

Paperwork is king. With no hard copy, people "forget" should a situation arise where you need to have something showing the issue has persisted. :-)
"We don't show any record of..." Joel |
Completely agree. Had issue with my x-5 2006, every time they screwed up-obtain paperwork, after 4 unsuccesful repairs got new x-5 2007. so far so good.
