Quality Control - Windshield

I noticed that my windshield was scratched on the inside. The location of the scratches is so low that it is inconceivable that it could have happened after manufacture. Looks like an in transit issue from the glass manufacturer. Even so, it should have been noticed in final inspection. I was willing to let it go if BMW would make an adjustment and not claim it against me at the end of the lease. No go.

The dealer agreed and ordered a replacement.

It has been installed. Now my Heads Up Display is very dim, even adjusted to the max it is not legible. Headlights on or off makes no difference. Also if the headlights are in automatic mode, they go on no matter how bright it is outside.

I took the car back, dealer checked part numbers to make sure that it was the correct windshield, and says - "I don't know what the problem is."

I figure that a sensor wire was either not connected or reversed. Dealer should have checked the car before telling me that it was ready.

I noticed that my windshield has very minute scratches in it as well. Longitudal in nature. More noticable in bright sunlight. They look somewhat evenly distributed making me think this is the glass itself. Perhaps this is a special glass used for the heads-up display?

I just had mine replaced (hit by a rock in Telluride), the first glass they brought was all scratched. So they had to order a new one from BMW. I think this might be a problem in the packing when they ship the glass.
On another note the installer told me it is the thinnest glass he has ever replaced.

The Heads Up display definitely requires a special reflective coating on the windscreen. A couple of years back Heads Up display wasn't available on E60s here as they had shortage of the specific windscreen. Your mention of very dim display makes me think they fitted a standard windscreen vs the specific one required for HUD. They ought to check again that part number. RealOem details

The windshield is special. It is laminated in a different way to prevent double images for the HUD reflection.

Got the car back, the new windshield was the same part number as the one that was taken out. Apparently the box that houses the rain sensor and light sensor comes with the winsdhield. The new sensor required the v25 software upgrade. All is working now.

I think there may be an overall issue with the glass. I have a lot of scratches on a rear quarterlight. I want that changed out too. Quite annoying though that it wasn't picked up through pre-delivery checks.
