PC Magazine’s 2nd Annual Digital Drive Awards: BMW X5 Takes Car of the Year

http://www.egmcartech.com/2007/05/02...r-of-the-year/,,, is it true that the Acura MDX is better in handling that the x5.... i had a cayenne and the x5 handles alot better , without adaptive drive & active steering (dunno if they really improve handling.).......

Yes, it is true...the MDX does handle better. Roundel magazine is even quoted as saying they were surprised at the fact that the MDX could hand more power into the corners then the X5. Not to mention you get a lot more for a lot less with the Acura:

- 3 option packages available: Sport, technology, Entertainment
- rear DVD, moonroof, auto lift gate, heated seats, sat radio, BT, rear heated seats, etc............price tag: $48,665 loaded. Now if it only didn't look like @ss.

nope.

Looks like the writer of this article spent about 3 minutes w/ each car and based his facts mostly from brochures...come on now, he named the X5 "Car of the Year" because of it technology, namely the Nav and Back-up camera, which we all know are its weakest tech features. The MDX kicks the X5 in the ass in these areas.

Then regarding the ride...if you dont actually drive a X5 w/ ADAPTIVE DRIVE you should not make a comment on the ride quality. I realize this is totally "subjective" (here we go again) but the X5 w/ Adaptive Drive (Sport model in US) is truely a different animal than the non-sport model and not even in the same league as the previous year models.
I spent a week driving the MDX, and extensivly tested the X5 sport vs non-sport before buying and IMO the X5 Sport had the best ride.

Now the difference between the MDX and X5 was very close, but to say the MDX is clearly superior just is not true. If you have not driven the MDX and X5 w/ ADAPTIVE DRIVE side by side try it, you will be amazed.

This article can be taken w/ a grain of salt, IMO the writer did not do enough research.

Pretty sure Roundel would put the BMW in the most favorable light possible.

X5FX 05-03-2007 10:39 AM

Yes, for the Roundel article the writer actually did his homework and drove the vehicles. My point was that it appears the PC mag writer never did his homework...looks like he gathered a bunch of brochures and wrote an article.

BTW- Wagner, you should try out the 07 w/ adaptive drive...you will be impressed at the difference it really makes.

Wagner 05-03-2007 10:47 AM

I'd agree, the PC guy just went anti-Japan.

nupe10123 05-03-2007 11:13 AM

I've driven both the MDX and the 07 X5 w/ adaptive drive. The MDX was clearly better imo. I'm not in the market, but did suggest it to my friend who is. I was quite shocked by how good the MDX handled - never expected that.

ummmm, shouldn't they be ranking PC's? Given that they narrowed their field based on particular options available (technology related), I wouldn't put too much stock in a computer magazine ranking cars when it comes to anything but........... computers.
