We replaced a Range Rover with the X5 and could not be happier. The RR was a disgrace reliability wise. The RR sport is an overweight, top heavy vehicle that can't touch the X5 for handling, comfort and available features. What the Sport has is the looks allot of people like. If you could be a fly on the wall at a RR service dept. and listened to the ongoing complaints you would never get one. It was a happy day when it left. That being said I've heard people have had no problems with them but it's too hit or miss for me. The one thing we liked about it was it's capability in snow which was excellent.

Beefy 05-12-2007 11:18 AM

My wife has a Landrover Discovery, it spent about 40 days in the workshop last year. That is the reason I have ordered anothe X5 3.0d which arrives in two weeks. I would have liked to buy the RR sport but not after the bad service.

calix5fan 05-12-2007 02:28 PM

Porsche Cayenne

The RR Sport is okay but I would not consider due to 1.) quality issues 2.) I'm too tall for that car. The X5 has a lot more leg room for the driver.

X5_2_OBX 05-12-2007 11:54 PM

Probably would have gotten a used Sequoia or Land Cruiser for a few years before "downsizing". X5 replaced a Suburban and they debated around about whether or not it was logical to "downsize" now (5 kids). The X5 might be a decrease in size, but it's a BIG increase in power, appearance and technology! Right now I think they made the right decision but I'm sure in a few years when the face-lifted model comes out I will think differently.

DCC 05-13-2007 11:08 PM

:) Touareg V10 :)

AleX5 05-14-2007 04:59 AM

Hi,

true, RR sport for tall drivers is not convenient, not only because of leg space, specially space to the roof is limited even in lowest seat position. Nice optic, not bad drive, but that´s all. Nothing to do with E70 or ML.

I would take ML again. I had one for 5 months, the best car I ever had until E70 arrived.

Best regards
Alex

If not for the BMW maintenance program I'd be in a range rover sport. Love the way those things look.

Yeah the RR is a great looking truck but it drives like a truck too. The X5 is a much better handling/driving vehicle. I had a full size RR and replaced it with the X5 and could not be happier. The RR was a POS, in the shop all the time, the X5 has been trouble free.

08WhtX5 09-29-2007 11:04 AM

Test drove a lot of the others and the X5 came out on top.

My thoughts:

ML550 - Nice truck, fast, comfortable but more Truck Like then wife wanted.
RR Sport - Non SC is a pig and not very high tech - SC easily 10K more than 4.8. Looks great though.
Cayenne - Just not kid friendly enough, maintenance costs are ridiculous.
The others - no comparison

Talked to a buddy with the RR, he talked me OUT of the RR and into the X5. I've actually drifted a few corners in the X5, the thing handles amazing for something 6000lbs:thumbup:

It is amazing how it handles and it's a comfortable ride too.

willtwilson 09-29-2007 02:27 PM

Did some driving recently on the way down from Scotland with damp roads and a bit of leaf residue on them. Drifting it round some of those corners was one of the best driving experiences ever. Coupled with beautiful scenery and fairly empty roads, couldn't ask for more.

Test drove a seemingly very cheap Porsche Cayenne Turbo today which had must have had a rocket strapped to it, since it appeared to pretty much take off when the Turbo kicked in. Nice level of finish and well styled car also. Any particular known reasons to steer clear of them or weak points perhaps?

FirstBMW 09-29-2007 02:33 PM

Just finished the review and choose the X5 3.0 over the Q7 aside from the great ride in the X5, I really needed the bigger back door system for transporting my bicyle (it goes in, the kids can sit on the roof!). Third choice was the Acura MDX, but it is a bit smaller than I wanted and no where near as nice design.

you mean other than the $100k+ price tag :wow:

Smythe 09-29-2007 04:30 PM

Well, for right now I'd stick with the LR3 I already have. I have no real practical reason to take a hit and get an X5, but I would love to have relatively economical turbo-diesel torque and better handling. As I've posted before, I'm waiting for the 3.0sd. :)

Porsche Cayenne or Audi Q7

I'm liking the new ML a lot... I think that would be my other choice now. I was between the X5 and Cayenne before but after I test drove the E70, I didn't even make it to the Porsche dealer!

brian5 09-30-2007 04:13 PM

Definitely the BMW 335xi !! No other SUV would satisfy me...

Actually, there are a lot of cars I would pick before the X5, but assuming we're going down the list, the next best thing would be an Infiniti FX.

Acura MDX, even though I am still not a fan of the exterior styling and the dynamics are way too close to the Ody Touring Minivan we last owned.

If I had to do it over again I'd wait for the TT diesel, if it ever comes....

mkar 10-04-2007 01:25 PM

I got really f***ing tired of waiting around for BMW to get their act together with the new X5's so I took out a Cayenne S for the hell of it yesterday. Better engine than 4.8 I felt but the interior's conveniences luxuries and electronics and whatnot were nowhere near what the X5 offers. In a 911, I could do without iPod, bluetooth, wood accents, etc., but not in my truck. Porsche should have updated it for the luxury market...Speed enthuisiasts who don't need all the tech BS don't even consider buying an SUV for driving thrill. Bummy BMW...got me back! (but I don't know if I ever left)
