The iPhone will work as a Bluetooth® enabled cell phone on every BMW Assist-equipped model
with Bluetooth® hands-free calling produced 10/04 or later except 7 Series, which received this
service effective with 3/05 production.
Access to the iPod via the vehicle controls and central information or radio display is only
possible on cars equipped with iPod/USB interface. The iPod/USB interface is available on 3 and
5 series with 03/07 production, the X5 with 04/07 production and the 6 series with 09/07
production date.

Bluetooth works fine, just like my HTC TyTn (no better though)...but the dock connector to aux in audio cable does NOT work...I would think this means the 6FL cable wont work either, can anyone confirm?

My plan for now, as I have a brand new, never used ipod nano 8GB is to use that as a dedicated music server for the BMW, and the iPhone will simply be used as a phone and portable itunes library. My wife also has an iphone with a slightly different music collection, but we'll just come to some kind of agreement on what lives on the nano.

I for one am VERY happy that the BMW works with the bluetooth on the iPhone, that would have REALLY sucked if it didn't!

I just hope these ipod problems are fixed that I'm reading about form other members here with the 6FL option.

I believe the "iPod/USB interface" that BMW refers to in the article I quoted above is the 6FL option. We have the $400 6FL option on our X5 4.8, and my new iPhone works just fine with it. The only glitch is that when you first connect the iPhone to the 6FL cable, a message comes on the screen of the iPhone that says "This accessory is not compatible with the iPhone. Do you want to use "Airplane Mode" to avoid interference?" "Airplane Mode" turns off any RF signals from the iPhone so as not to cause any interference with an airplane's systems. Apparently, this message asking if you want to go to Airplane Mode appears whenever you connect the iPhone to an accessory that doesn't return a signal to it that it is "ready for iPhone" as the upcoming round of ipod & iPhone accessories will.

In any event, I just clicked the virtual button for "No, I don't want to go to "Aircraft Mode", and it worked just fine, transferring all three playlists, album, artist, and song info, etc. to the iDrive display. I was able to simultaneously listen to music from the iPhone while browsing the iPhone's phone number directory on the iDrive screen. I got exactly the same behavior, including the "Airplane Mode" message in my pickup truck, which has an Alpine aftermarket headunit with a dedicated iPod cable and a separate Parrot CK3100 hands-free Bluetooth telephone kit.

Glad to answer any other questions anybody may have.

Good info, thanks man.. Have you tried it with bluetooth only? OR is that what you were referring to when you said you browsed the phone contacts with the idrive? Also, are the voice commands working nicely with the BMW voice control?

I've just tried one test call through the Bluetooth, and it worked well. I haven't tried the voice commands with the iPhone yet, but they work OK with my wife's Motorola and with my Blackberry from work, so I anticipate they'll work with the iPhone. I'll try it next time I'm out and report back.

I was just trying to point out that the Bluetooth is active and works for transferring the iPhone's phone number directory even when the iPhone is also connected to the iDrive via the 6FL cable for the music library.

say I grab a MY2008 E70 without the ipod/iphone adapter... and I pick up an iphone 2 years down the line... can I still grab an adapter somewhere without hassle ?
