Painting Y Spoke Wheels Black?

I wanted to get some opinions on painting my Y-Spoke wheels black. I still have the stock 18's in my basement (Brand New w/500 miles of use). Wanted to do something different. Also considered gunmetal.

I have a 07 black sapphire 3.0si.

What do you guys think?

I think it would look nice. The other day I saw a grey X5 E70 with 21' rims painted black.... it looked very nice. It had the aero-kit.

This one has black style 215's which might give you an idea.

I wonder if anodize wouldn't be the way to go.. maybe a dark color. Seems like painting them would result in bad looking wear after a short period.

I'd like to get mind a sort of dark metalic gray myself. Plus it would hind the brake dust better.

Unless you have the professionally done, don't do it.

Get them powdercoated

Be careful when you get it done and look for a professional who has experience or the paint may start to chip off before you know it.

My exprience has been ... go with OEM wheels or reputable tuners (for example Ac Schnitzer, Hartge, Hamman) and pick the color you want to go for but don't get any paintjobs done afterwards.

As far as the color is concerned: black is nice but looks very agressive. If you go for black you would want a chrome lip as this makes the wheel look bigger. I was about to order the 21" black OEM wheels (see picture) but decided not to do it. The main reason was because my wife didn't like it that much (and the X5 will be her car) but also because it makes the wheels look small (even in 21"). The Ferric Grey (what we ordered) does provide a sporty look but is not as agressive.

Just my idea. Bottom line is: colors and rims are a matter of personal taste but before you go spend money it is certainly worth thinking twice and seeing the wheel in real life in the color you are considering.

Best of luck and post some pictures of the end result ... :beerchug:

As DrJay said, find a good powder coater or black chrome joint.

Do Not Anodize! powder coat your wheels black if need
