Two Reduced-emission X5 models for UK

BMW will launch two new versions of its X5 4-wheel drive that come in below the proposed 225g/km London Congestion Charge threshold which requires that drivers pay £25 to enter the capital each week day.

Deliveries of the new 3.0 D and 3.0 SD X5s will begin in December. The 3-litre D records CO2 emissions of 214g/km, the more powerful SD 216g/km. The improvements, which have been specifically developed for the UK market, have been achieved by fitting a regenerative braking system, an intelligent alternator (it mainly operates when the engine is decelerating, saving fuel) and intelligent airflaps behind the radiator grille that improves the car's aerodynamics at speed, features that have recently appeared on other BMWs as part of its Efficient Dynamics programme.

The revisions will make these two models and the Hybrid Lexus RX400h, the only large 4-wheel drives that do not attract the proposed £25 charge. BMW is also working to improve its 318d 3 Series, which currently emits 122g/km, to get it below the 120g/km threshold that Transport for London have said will be exempt from any charge next February.

Don't forget Gordon the Terrible's 225+ band on vehicle tax too. £400 next year and threats of worse to come.

Howabout the 4.8i and 3.0si? will they get the same treatment? howabout the Dynamic X-drive system? Will all these be included starting Oct 07?

in europe... an x5 without a diesel is very very rare

so i guess bmw will not put a lot of money in the petrol engines to reduce emission.

soon to be one more 4.8 in Europe. Just making sure the globe warms that little bit faster...

ED is being introduced across the X5 range, it was announced a few weeks ago. It was introduced earlier because of the UK market but I believe all X5's globally will get ED. I think this press relaease LeMans has is BMW GB wanting it to get out there that the two diesel X5's beat the 225g/km limit, it is a huge deal for BMW in the UK as none of the competitors cars get below that level. If you live in Central London and drive your car every day it will cost you over £6500 to drive a car over the 225g/km limit...under that 225 g/km barrier and it's £200 a year. MASSIVE sales advantage.

Amazing isn't it....but it has spurred BMW and also Audi with a new low emissions A8 into action so it's justified itself. It only applies to cars bought since the beginning of this year, though there is talk it may include all vehicles over 3.0 engine capacity that are over 6 years old.

They are also going to use emissions for raod pricing too in the UK. There is talk of a congestion charge in NYC I believe.....it will spread to many cities over the next few years.
