Runflats or not for winter set-up?
 

I have ordered a set of 212 wheels for my winter set-up and I have the option of getting non-runflat tyres for them. Has anyone driven an E70 on non-runflats? What are your thoughts? Do they make the ride massively more compliant? Reason I am asking is I would never look back to runflats for my E60 535d. The difference when fitted with regular tyres is huge. Ride is much better, car doesnt skip over bumps, I no longer feel the tiniest cracks on the road through the steering and my butt, road noise has more than halved. The only downsides being a slight loss of initial turn-in sharpness and the notion that I high speed blow out could have more serious consequences. Please advise

No experience with here with an E70, RFT or reg, but what would
be your concern? Seperate wheels, new tires, mount 'em up and
run them. I own a car that came with RFTs and now have non-RFT
tires on it: it's day and night...smoother, less noise, etc. Turn in
is not as good, surprisingly, but grip is superb. Not apples to apples
as I'm referring to my Vette not an X5.

"high speed blow out"?
What does that have to do with RFT tires or non-RFT tires? If you
suffer a true high speed blow out, (about the same odds as winning
your state's Daily pick 3 lotto, imo), a run flat tire is going to provide
about 1% "cushion" vs a reg. tire. A blow out is a blow out and they
happen very infrequently esp. on cars that toddle along at 80 mph
and less.

Slap on your set of snows and enjoy them. Be prepared for a possible
flat however.

I have used run-flats in the E70 in both summer and winter. In both, the tire is superior to the non-run flat one I had in my old X5.

Reason I am asking is because I drive very fast (regular 220 km/h+) and from what I've gathered over at the E60 forum a Rft tends to disintegrate slower than a regular tyre in the event of a blowout.

Do you mean that your E70 rides better on Rfts than your E53 did on regulars?
