No autotailgate for early 2008's

Dealer just called to confirm '08 production begins 10/1 but there will be NO autotailgate option. What can't BMW figure out that every other manufacturer has?

jules 09-08-2007 04:46 PM

Disapointed to hear that i to was waiting for the same. but im glad they still got the parking heater which I couldnt live without.

marcx5 09-08-2007 06:08 PM

so do they have the options list?? how do they know this if they don't have the new options?

what is a parking heater?

Craig 09-08-2007 06:43 PM

I think you can push a button while the engine is shut off and get heat for about 30 minutes. I've had it on other BMW's I've owned. Correct me if I'm wrong...

this feature has been on the X5 since it was launched in 2000! that is nothing new.

X5 Guy 09-08-2007 07:02 PM

Please see page 105 in your owners manual.

Residual Heat - The heat stored in the engine is used to heat the passenger compartment while stopped.

Pressing the right side switches on the residual heat utilization when the following conditions are met:

o up to 15 minutes after switching off the engine
o with the engine at operating temperature
o with sufficient battery voltage
o at an outside temperature below 77 degrees F

steef100 09-09-2007 05:04 AM

i already have the pricelist 2008 and there are 3 new options
-Sunshades
-Soft close doors
-Automatic tailgate (available 04/2008)

crazy4cars 09-09-2007 10:06 AM

This have been indeed a big shame, my car is 11/07 production and I will miss it, sometimes bmw is strange, I had that option on my 2003 E class
and it is 4 years later and bmw can not have it ready yet.

YAWN !!

marcx5 09-09-2007 04:59 PM

sunshades were in the original x5's... i have it in my 2002. no big deal.

soft close doors... nice, but have been around in other vehicles for many years.

auto tailgate.... they said same exact thing last year.

where is night vision? advanced cruise control? auto height adjustment? bmw really screwed up this time.... i'm so 'not' motivated to get the new model.

motordavid 09-09-2007 05:16 PM

No auto tailgate?! ...
That's it: no E70 for me.

I am waiting for the official word from BMW before deciding.
I really like the X5 but for me, the 3.0i X5 is way underpowered and the 4.8i is too pricey for me.
If there is no engine upgrade for the 3.0i then Mercedes or Porsche here I come.

Meiac09 09-09-2007 06:56 PM

+1 on all of those.

I wondered why there are 10 E70's on my (fairly small) dealers lot right now and only one X3.

3.0si doesn't compete. 4.8i is ludicrously expensive. Power Tailgate? They can't figure out how to do it with the fold down part at the bottom.

Adjustable Ride Height!? WHAT'S WRONG!?!?! They had this in 2002, they stole it from the Rover parts bin. This is one of the most useful ways to jack up the price by $2000. Ours has been completely indispensible in our relatively cheap-o Touareg!!! It's standard on cheaper lexuses and mercedes! Get real! (Pet Peeve)

You are absolutely correct on all counts.
The days of selling us underpowered cars, with fewer standard options and charging an arm and foot and over for me.
I like the brand and most of it's products, but my goodness I am not going to pay more than what is out there for an underpowered and austere SUV.

I agree with you on this, that why I pick up an ML550. Plus the sale guys at my local dealer was no help at all.

This is unbelievable, how can this be delayed for so many times? really disappointing if it is true.

marcx5 09-09-2007 10:35 PM

even though the 2008 x5 will be a great car.... seems like BMW really screwed up this time and is lacking on the features that people want. i agree with the post above about adjustable ride height being a pet peeve... makes no sense.... it's an SUV... freaking put it in there!!

550 not yet available in Europe. I was wondering when will they stick that engine in the ML. It would murder the 4.8 in a straight line. I've seen sub 6 second 0-60 runs quoted!!!

That is a good deal, and the ride looks stunning.
Hope are you enjoying it?

scoobydoo 09-10-2007 11:48 AM

Guys you have it pretty good over there! Where I live this car would touch $140k

So far everything is great, I really wanted the X5 but price wise the 4.8 is not worth too me and with it not having no autotailgate was a killed for me as i needed a SUV by end of this year(third child on the way)

Can you contrast the ride, handling, performance of the 550 vs. the 4.8?

I'm in the market for a replacment for our 02 4.4 X5 and have somewhat turned off by the problem reports and high prices for the latest model. We really like the way the X drives and previous MLs always seemed too soft for our taste.

jamesboags 09-10-2007 07:00 PM

Is this an X5 forum ?

+1 I was just going to say that.

It's one thing to go into the E70 forum and complaint and bash the car that you actually own.

But to do it without having actually owning one, I think is a little bit out of line.

motordavid 09-10-2007 08:54 PM

I'm going back to Therapy:
no automatic tailgate is offered...
the sun may not come up tomorrow.

mcgrady 09-10-2007 09:22 PM

What's with the fixation on automatic tailgate?...

If it was something like touchscreen navi, BUILT IN 6 CD CHANGER. Even Mercury and Hyundai have magically figured out how to put 6 CD's in the dash...

That's my pet peeve

motordavid 09-10-2007 09:32 PM

I'd guess that some of us were poking at the handwringing and
ranting over the "lack of power tailgate" option...

cosmos 09-11-2007 01:38 AM

Its the ML500 in the EU. Same engine as in The States, just marketing difference. FYI they dont have a S550, but they have an S500.

ML in Europe is still 306ps while the 550 in the US tops 380.

never drove the 4.8 only the 3.0, so I really can give a good comparison. As for handling yeah the ride is softer on the ML but is just another SUV for me.

Not in every country. The 388ps engine is available here, although it's called ML500. But (IIRC) early '07 MLs were still 306ps.
