fyi - ipod (updated)
just so you know before hand, the itouch(latest ipod) will not work with your 6fl / idrive unit.
i've had my itouch 16gb for about a week and decided give my wife my old 30gb and use the touch in the X5. To my disappointment the itouch will not work. it can only be used as an accessory which means u will have to use the itouch itself to select tracks, albums etc. If it's plugged in using the 6fl you'll hear the music but you will not be able to use the itouch to change tracks etc cuz it will be locked as it's plugged in via the bottom port. so u'll basically be stuck and unable to do anything. u'll only be able to use the itouch though the headphone jack as an accessory and that will enable you to change the songs through the itouch. so if u have an itouch or plan to buy an itouch, keep your old ipod unit as well. hopefully a bimmer software upbrade will change all that. UPDATE 09/28/07 update version 1.1.1 for the itouch allows it to be used with the e70 6fl like a regular ipod. YAAAAYYYY! UPDATE 09/29/07 there's one more problem with the itouch. when the 6fl is plugged into the vehicle (usb+audio), then u go ahead and plug it into the itouch, the itouch will not work. It will respond in a crazy manor, it will just keep blinking and blinking and displaying accessory connected. In order for it to work you must unplug the 6fl, usb end, then connect the itouch, then reconnect the usb to the vehicle. it will work fine then. however, like mentioned in one of the above links provided, the looks like it is unable to charge the itouch. there will be no charging display on the itouch so it will look like it's not being charged. From what i've noticed, it's actually being charged but probably at a low rate where the itouch can't detect. I'm certain that it's not draining the ipod cuz i've yet to see my battery go lower after much useage. in the provided link a couple of posts up, there's mention of another cable specifically for use with the iphone which enables it to be charged @ 500mah and will cause the charge signal to display. I'd imagine u'd need that same cable for the itouch. I've yet to find any other info on that cable and it supposedly has been available from August. |
Bummer! I just watched the Tour video for the iPod Touch and thought it was the best innovation I've seen all year.
Sickyute: Can you give feedback to BMW and encourage them to develop a software update? |
Good to know, thanks for the post
|
how does one give bmw feedback?
i love the itouch. the wifi internet is fast, the touch screen works great, the color is good, everything about it is good. great little gadget. the auto spelling corrector thing when u type the wrong work or spell it incorrectly is great. i can't say how much i like this thing. they just need to make it work. the question is, has anyone tried the new ipod classics to see if they create any issue? |
Ooh crap. I was getting ready to get one for the E70. I guess I'll stick to my good old fashioned Nano for now.
Thanks for the post sickyute. BTW, I hope you're enjoying your ride now after all that mess. |
yeah man. i'm finally able to enjoy it. i go driving for no real reason now. thanks.
just so yall know, my e70 is using version 27 according to the service tech. just for refference. |
have you tried the 1.11 update...its supposed to work.
|
1.11 update for the itouch?
when i connect my itouch to my pc and search for updates, it has no updates available which leads me to believe i have the most up to date version. thing is i don't see how they already have an update and the official release date is the 28th of this month. i will look into it though. |

btw- I seem to recall another post that talked about BMW and Itouch/Iphone and a new cable was necessary for 6fl option

I just bought the 80gb Ipod Classic and updated to the latest software version (for the ipod). However, it still just hangs up when you unplug it from the 6fl. You cannot switch it off unless you reboot the Ipod Classic. If you are playing the Ipod in the car and then stop and switch off your car, the Ipod is stuck on in Aux mode and does not turn off, which I think would drain the car battery if left like that for too long.
|
i saw something about little bugs with the new classic.
in one of the links provided above some people alluded to them as well and asked for an update cuz of the issues. i guess it's safe to say for now the only one that works is the older version. apple is usually on the ball to fix stuff like that so it may be soon to come. |
it will be great to see iphone integretion in a bimmer / x5.
but they should wait till the iphone has more storage capacity for tunes IMO. |
i've read all the links and i can't see where it says it makes the ithouch work now.
i'll update and report back. |
update version 1.1.1 for the itouch allows it to be used with the e70 6fl like a regular ipod.
YAAAAYYYY! |

ur best bet is to watch the video on apple's website.
you'll see and learn a lot more there than i could ever show you in a couple of pictures. as for the idrive and stuff, it looks/operates exactly the same as the ipod. |

yes and the cable is supposed to fix your first problem too.
|
so where is this cable?
|
I have the Ipod Classic with the software update 1.01. I have the 6fl. I have 2 questions:
1. What is supposed to happen to the Ipod, when it is left plugged into the 6fl and you switch the car off ? 2. What is supposed to happen to the Ipod, when you disconnect it from the 6fl and take it with you? |

No worries... 6FL is the option code for the iPod Adapter on the BMW dealer order sheet.

Ah, thanks a lot. Then it is what I am looking for. Do you think it is possible to add it in my car as aftermarket option? Currently I only have AUX input in my E70

where can I get the 6fl that charges the iphone/itouch? |
My 2008 E70 has the 6FL option. When I connected my second generation 15 GB iPod to it, it would only play, if I pressed play on the iPod before plugging the connector in. Then, I had no menus on the iDrive screen and the iPod locked after playing only one song. I did double-check to make sure that the USB connector was plugged in. Is there a generic problem with older iPods like mine that anyone has heard of, or do I have a problem with my vehicle or cable? I suppose it might be time anyway to upgrade to a new 80 GB iPod classic.
|
According to BMW NA, only Generation 4 iPods or higher are compatible. See following link. (go through the options to select 2007 X5)
It looks like its time for an iPod upgrade. http://bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/O...Tips/iPod.aspx |
I have a 2007 X5 with the iPod auxillary....so you are telling me if I bought the iPod itouch it would not work in my car though the iDrive?

The ipods gen 3 and before plugged into the firewire port on the computer. Gen 4 and later use the USB port. The proprietary connector on the bottom of the ipod remained the same. I suspect that since BMW uses a USB port, it won't work with any ipod designed to use with a firewire port.
