Windshield (with HUD) repair
Has anyone successfully repaired a small chip and crack (about 1/4 inch across the chip) on new E70 with HUD. I read the entire post of F5FX's troubles and what I gathered is that these windshields are virtually irepairable by a classic technique. Am I correct about this, and should I forget about the repair and bite the bullet and change the glass?

Let your insurance company bite the bullet and change the glass.

Windshield (with HUD) repaired on 545i
My lease is up on my 545i in November, so I decided to fix all dings that might result in lease charges.
I had Safelite Auto Glass repair a small crater in the windshield (approx 1/16" round -- no cracking). They used a UV curing resin -- small tool to clean out loose glass and rough up the hole, inject resin, place UV lamp over repair, scrape off excess resin, polish surface -- took < 15 minutes. However, it is very visible -- this type of repair seems to be structurally sound, but is even easier to see than the original damage spot. So, if it is anywhere near driver's line of sight, I would say don't do it... |
Let the dealer do it through insurance. My tech guy told me that if you have HUD and the glass is not installed properly and is out as little as 1/8" of an inch on the seal the HUD won't work properly. Not worth the aggrevation IMO.

Well I guess I will just have to live with it and wait for eventually more damage on the glass before I replace it. The problem is that insurance of 'high value vehicles' in Alberta has a mandatory $2,000 deductible on comprehensive, including glass so it would be my money in any case.

I have the smae problem mmouse
I am so pissed at the city and the freakin mayor for using sand with huge rocks to clear the snow on the streets. Now i have a chip in the windshield. I am a bit dissapointed because my old X5, I had lots of rocks thrown to the windshield but didnt even chip it. You are right, this is a thin glass. What is the price anyway? I will call my sales guy and see if he will cut me a deal |
My dealer said they can fix it for $40. I wonder how they will since I have HUD
